Which Hartley is probably a contributing party to that success.

I shudder to think of where the Flames would have been without that the past couple of seasons.

Totally agree with you. Just find it interesting that one coach remains. Kind of weird for the new guy coming in no. Pick your staff, but here's the Eliminator..........he's loved by the fans in Calgary, we seem to like him cause we didn't curb him with the others, but please, do what you like, pick your own staff................

This is definitely a strange feeling. Firstly, in no way shape or form did I expect this to happen, and I thought Hartley should have been given another season based on his track record.
However, I do really like that Treliving puts it on the line. If he sees a weakness, and I believe that in this case it was a weakness that we weren't as privy to rather than simply a systems change, then he addresses it. It makes me confident that he is not going into next season with Wideman as a #4 and Smid/Engelland as 5/6. It makes me confident that he will get a legitimate goalie and help on the right side.

This move sets the clock on his own job, he knows that, and is acting decisively to improve this team. Based on previous moves, I think Treliving and Burke will hire the right man for the job.

Hasn't been a rule, though I'm sure the teams sometimes pass off informal compensation when making later trades.

The unwritten-written rule is that you don't stand in the way of a minor league coach/manager when they get an NHL opportunity. Aside from being a dick move, it would be an excellent way to ensure up and coming coaches and managers avoid your organization in the future.

There are a couple things indicating that could be the case....tho admittedly nothing concrete. Treliving may or may not she'd some light on it but it's ridiculous to dismiss it outright.

I have mixed feelings about this like many posters.
Bob's Jack Adam's winning year was an incredibly fun year for coach, player and fan. Beating the Canucks and making the 2nd round will be a lifetime memory. Especially for me since we played the Ducks and I got to go to two playoff games in SoCal at the enemy rink.

I thought the unbelievably quick turnaround bought Bob another year of leeway, but obviously not. This year was disappointing through and through. There were some great individual accomplishments this season (Johnny, Mony, Gio & Backlund), but too little too late as the start of the year was nothing short of abysmal.

Personally, I place a large share of the blame on the 3-goalie monster that put Bob in an uncomfortable situation. And that is on the GM. The three goalie situation permeated the team's overall confidence, and by the time they got back into a groove, it was too late. The PP suffered, the PK suffered, and the rest is history.

For that reason, I think Bob deserved another year (at least until Christmas). He did so much good with Johnny & Mony and Bennett's confidence. Sure, I questioned his lineup decisions sometimes (Nakladal's 3 second game), but it wasn't Bollig & Raymond who lost us the season. It was the big guns and goalies who couldn't get going.

-not based on just this season
-Bob took the Flames as far as he could, got a lot out of players, but it was time to move on

Hmm...tell me more about the American University of Antigua's Medical Program.
 Sounds reputable.

Is this presser being held in a wind tunnel?

			re Gelinas:
 1) the PP improved tremendously in the 2nd half of the season. As someone mentioned, that coincided with the replacement of Wideman with Hamilton. Who was responsible for Wideman getting such a long rope? Hard to say, but my speculation is Hartley.

 2) regardless, Hartley is ultimately responsible for his assistants

 3) just because Gelineas wasn't fired, does NOT mean he will be the PP coach next year.

Personally, I very much hope that Gelinas stays with the organization - in whatever capacity they deem appropriate.

I tend to dismiss extremes as a matter of routine. And I already responded to this general point in a reply to Locke.

But in short, coaches like Hartley get tuned out. It is inevitable given their style. The fact that it happens doesn't mean there is a 'country club' attitude forming.

But hell, if you want to go that way, the fact that we had to bench three players for getting wasted and treating practice like a joke the next day stands as an argument that the country club formed right under Hartley's nose. If this is a credible concern, then firing the coach is a logical action to take at this point.
