Well one thing is for certain - the social justice warriors of the left aren't the only ones who enjoy indulging in outrage, shaming, and virtue signalling over issues that have have little impact on the real world.

Just being little babies and looking for something to whine about, sitting their in a shirt made in China, shoes are probably made in India, drinking coffee from South America and eating fruit from the States. But you had better save the Alberta farmers by boycotting Earls.......
I have no documents but i did listen to the President of the Canadian Cattle Assoc (or something like that) on the radio last Thursday a day after all this news broke out.

he had never even heard of this "certification" before. Its something either very new or rarely ever used. He did read the guidelines before appearing on the show and was adamant that Alberta beef not only matched the American standard of "humane" but surpassed it in most cases. They just never thought to make a brand of it...nor should they.

This is nothing more than Earls hiding behind some faux label/marketing ploy in attempt to placate Albertans that the reason they dont sell local product is because it doesnt meet some sort of arbitrary level. That's not the case and they have been caught in their attempt to make it seem that way.

Earls was trying to save money by purchasing this "brand' that has little to do with quality and everything to do with marketing and trying to spin it as something else.

they are going to pay dearly in Alberta for it.

How do you know what the quality is like, have you tried it yet?

And I don't see how they're saving money if it costs 3x as much as their old supply

Seems like a very dumb decision by Earls that will be discussed in marketing classes for years to come. If there is one thing Albertans are very proud and defensive about, it is their beef.

Also, put me in the group that has never eaten beef at Earls. Whenever I'm in Calgary someone usually ends up taking me to the location in Willow Park and I always get their delicious, yet very overpriced, buffalo wings.

Well, just as an FYI, when I went to Superstore about a week ago - No French's ketchup. They had the strange flavours that I wouldn't ordinarily buy, but the regular ketchup did not even have a place on the shelves. So much for the protest against Loblaws going anywhere, at least in Western Canada.

In the end this doesn't really affect me at all, the only thing I ever eat at Earls is the cherry in my Old Fashioned

Probably not an Alberta cherry

Earls doesn't serve Alberta Cherries? That it, I guess I'll never, ever eat there for at least a month. That'll show them!

When I was at superstore on Sunday they had both Heinz and French's. There as significant fewer French's ketchup on the shelf than there was Heinz which would suggest to me more people are buying. My wife wouldn't have bought French's Ketchup in a million years before and grabbed one before I could even tell her to and said the reason why. Really surprised me, she isn't a person to usually do something like that.

That is such a stupid argument it doesn't even deserve a response. Since when are Cherries and Alberta staple like Beef is? I'll bet you a lot of money a Vancouver based restaurant sure as hell uses BC Cherries when they are in season, and wouldbt have the audacity to condemn their harvesting process if they decided to switch like they did the beef industry.

Why does everyone in this thread keep talking about steaks? It is all beef, and I think Earls makes burgers and other items with beef. I think they are known for burgers, but that may be from years ago. I know both Moxies and Earls were pretty much the same thing when I was in high school. I cant remember which one had the slogan " A place for burgers".

Do you always check that this is the case? Do any of the people boycotting Earl's check the sourcing of every restaurant they go to before eating there?
If sourcing wasn't an issue of any kind like you seem to suggest, then why would Earls make any kind of announcement change at all?

Oh, that's odd. The Country Hills Superstore had nothing. I assumed that Loblaws was playing the, "yeah, we will say whatever to make the bad press go away and continue with our plan once people get bored" game.

But you supported an establishment that presumably serves beef. Did you check to see if said beef was Alberta beef? What if it wasn't? Would it matter and if not why does it matter for Earls?

They changed suppliers that could provide a different certification. Whether that certification means anything is debateable but there is nothing that should lead to a boycott.

As Polak noted and as I noted, Earls never announced they'd no longer serve that poisonous AB beef. They simply said they were going certified humane.

Do I care? Not really. Earls is a bit too fancy for my tastes. I only buy steaks from "restaurants" where i know there'll still be some shotgun pellets and "animal" hair mixed into my steak.

Do I think it sucks that AB Beef lost this contract to supply? Sure I guess so. I like to see local business do well. Have I ever chosen a place because of their beef supplier? Nope. Will I ever? Probably not.

Am I more likely to shop at a place that is certified humane? Nope.

Do I think a vast overwhelming majority of people would answer those questions the same as me? Yup. Do I think a whole bunch of people will temporarily act tough and go with the groupthink mentality to avoid being labelled some traitorous alberta hater? Yup.
You think Earls is fancy? Earls is a old burger joint that bought some expensive tiles.

Saw the MacDonald's delivery truck today. It was covered in "100% Canadian beef" signs. "plus a pinch of salt and pepper"

Probably because they made them not selecting Alberta beef a big moral issue in an attempt to get new, or appease existing, customers.

Basically, they asked for the attention by acting sanctimonious rather than just changing suppliers and being content with that.

Yes the certification might be BS but until someone provides actual evidence of this,
I'm going to assume it's not some organized fraud racket and that Alberta farmers simply don't meet the standards.

You know that saying one farm in the states has better standards than precious alberta beef is not the same as saying all farms in the states have better standards... right?
In my world the burden of proof sits with the person/industry that makes the claim.

I'm just throwing this out there, but you may want to re-read my post. Or even just keep reading to the end of that paragraph.

My wife tells me it was not a superstore, it as actually a Loblaws City Market in the Northwest, whatever that is. Seemed like Superstore to me (same products).
