Calgary and All That Is Good About It

Hello CP!

So after living the majority of my life out in the prairies I have made the decision to relocate and make Calgary my full time home! Being able to make Flames games on a weekday will be awesome.

I have spent summers here in the past, however it is difficult to adjust to a new city and enjoy it in a short couple of months. So my question to CP is what do I need to get involved with in Calgary upon arrival? What do you like to do? What are the "can't miss" spots? What makes Calgary special to you?

Tell me what you love about the city and how I can best enjoy it! I figured this would be a fun topic to learn a little bit more about the CP user base and about the city.

PS I'll need a new hockey team to play on so if anybody is in need of a winger please let me know.

How old are you? Suggestions will be different if you're 25 vs if you're 45 with a family.

Regardless, floating down the Bow is a summer staple and we will probably see that pick up soon.

I love that I can roll out my back door and ride my bike up Nose hill in 15 minutes. It's not like riding in the mountains, but when you don't have a lot of time, being able to escape for an hour and get some exercise is awesome.

Lilac festival is coming up. Beer Garden hopping can be a great time.

Fish Creek has some really good trails off the beaten path with some challenging terrain.

Calgary really has become a summer festival city. Folk Fest, Sled Island, Reggae Fest, Afrikadey, etc. Consider volunteering as a way to get a pass and meet people.

We have a weekly shinny game going Thursday afternoons from September to April at the West Hillhurst arena (most players over 40, but that is not a requirement).

Another great thing about Calgary - close to plenty of awesome flyfishing.

No matter what anyone tells you, Calgary does have a vibrant downtown scene.
Like any city the economic heart of it (where all the skyscrapers are) is definitely dead after 6:00, but who wants to hang out there anywhere. When people talk about a vibrant downtown, to me, that's now what they should mean. It's the outskirts of downtown that really count.

Go 1 block in any direction of downtown and you'll find some really great places (except maybe west, Sunalta has some work to do).

Inglewood, large swaths of the Beltline, 17th Ave, Mission, Kensington, Sunny Side are all great neighborhoods to explore and hang out in, and the East Village is really starting to grow up. There is also St. Patrick's Island, which is a fantastic new gem right on the edge of downtown. Just chilling out there on a warm weekend is a great way to spend the day.

Ship and anchor patio on a summer Friday evening is a great place to start re-acquainting yourself!

Going to piggy back on this one. I'm a born-and-raised Calgarian but I've recently moved elsewhere due to the economic conditions for now. I miss the mountains the most, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the winter, and scrambling/mountain biking in the summer. There are great mtb trails in the city, better trails about 40 minutes out, and even more deeper in the Rockies. There are so many mountains you can scramble up that you can probably do a different one every weekend for years, out of Calgary. Lots of outdoors things to do for weekend warriors (like me)!
