As long as one of Dubois, Tkachuk or Chychrun are still available when we pick -- I'm fine.

Aww leave the poor guy alone. Don't you know that the leafs have the best group of players under 23 that can't make the jump to The NHL?

That Nylander looked great once he did.
I'm just waiting to buy my Leaf Stamkos jersey.

At least we can agree on two things.
Nylander looks decent
Stamkos will be a leaf
Now back to the draft.....
Flames picking 5th (potentially) is a lot to like.

I would just like a dollar for every time the NHL Draft Lottery simulator is run between now and April 30th - I would be a guaranteed multi-millionaire!!

Kind of funny the Leafs signed the most expensive head coach and still ended up in last place. Then another expensive head coach(Todd McLellan) in the league signed by the Oilers ended up second last.

The odds have the Oilers dropping from 2nd to 4th..... poor Chychrun. McDavid is probably telling him to run for the Hills or go play in Europe or something.

I am hoping that if the Flames do not win a lotto pick, that Columbus and two of the three in the top 3 win the others (Toronto plus either of Van/Edm). Columbus because they are probably going to take Dubois at #4 and both Van/Edm are likely to take Chychrun. Leaving Dubois for us to take at 5.
Ideally, the Flames win one of the three lotto picks and we walk away with Laine or Puljujarvi.

It's funny to me how so many people seem more excited about the idea of a Finn than Matthews, the clear #1. Is it they want a winger to play with Bennett at Centre or something? Don't get me wrong, I'd like any of the top 3, but Matthews is ideal.

Tkachuk sure had a hell of a playoffs. 16 points in 7 games. Over a G/G.
I'll take him or Dubois happily. Only thing is Dubois would probably take another year in the Q, whereas Tkachuk has already destroyed the O, and is probably ready.

If Matthews utililzed a right handed stick everyone would be on that Matthews or bust wagon. It's just that our entire top 9 is left shots and so are our best forward prospects like Shinkaruk, Jankowski, and Eatbread. While handedness isn't everything it is good to have balance especially on the power play. The better PPs all have one timer options from opposite faceoff circles.
Everyone here would be happy with Matthews but it does mean moving a Frolik or Colborne+ to fill the hole. A guy like Laine kills two birds with one stone.

The guy who is second is a 6-4 RW who has a similar shooting style to Ovechkin that can slot in and receive passes from Gaudreau all day. Laine might score 50 if he's paired with Gaudreau and I'm not exaggerating.
The #1 area of need in the system is a RW with size, and the second is a pure sniper. Laine is basically everything that the Flames need currently.
Matthews is going to likely be the better overall player, but the Flames are set up the middle if they don't get him. If they do, then the lines will be set up
Gaudreau-Monahan-(Who Knows)
Bennett-Matthews-(Who Knows)
Colborne-Backlund-Frolik
Just means that the Flames will have to go snag a RW or two through UFA, which is a shorter term fix. Laine would be a long term fix that would fit in the right age group with the other guys. Either scenario is fine, but it would work better for the make up of the team to get Laine.
If we were Vancouver or Toronto, Matthews makes infinitely more sense.

I don't necessarily think Matthews is a clear #1 as in he's a whole tier above the rest. In fact I think Laine is roughly on the same level and Matthews only edges him out because he's plays the more important position at centre.
The Flames are already deepest at centre with arguably two future #1 centres and a guy playing like a #2 centre in Backlund who can have as our #3 when Bennett is more developed. Laine looks like a big franchise winger. He's a right shot which we lack, has the size we lack, and is a pure sniper which we lack, especially on the power play. Laine looks like he could be one of the top goalscorers in the NHL if he hits his potential. Laine is the fantastic fit for the Flames even though Matthews looks like a franchise centre and would be great too. We could certainly fit Matthews in somewhere.
I think fans hoping for Laine seems only natural, we'd be just peachy at centre without Matthews and Laine ticks all the boxes that we need. Now I wouldn't prefer Puljujarvi over Matthews, but Puljujarvi would be another fantastic fit for us as a big, strong, hard driving, playmaking, scoring, right shot RW.
We don't need to be greedy and hope for #1, we're just hoping for anywhere in that top 3 The guys projected to go 2 and 3 fit our immediate and long term needs. Laine would have the bonus IMO of being one of two players who should be an impact player right away in the NHL IMO.
IMO Laine-Monahan-Gaudreau could be the best line in the entire NHL in 2 years.
Matthews would be great too! But we'd settle for one of the big Finnish wingers quite easily.

^^^ Highlights of Laine on the Powerplay on his off-wing reminds me so much of Ovechkin/Iginla with that one timer. We really lack that.

Would be so perfect for the flames to get anyone in the top 3. But this team has done well developing/drafting players for the last few years. Confident they will make a great pick and develop him into an awesome player wherever they pick.
If they can get that first round pick from Dallas I hope they either package it with something else to get another pick in the top 20 (unlikely) or trade it in a package to help solidify the net next season (for example: Bishop, Murray, fleury, or Elliott)
