So... if I carry a hockey stick and ball, is jaywalking now legal?

Edit...
Reading the relevant AB regulations & Calgary bylaw, I didn't know that "jaywalking" only applies within 1 block of a traffic control signal (or "pedestrian corridor" -- which is undefined). It's nice to know I'm not breaking any laws jogging across my neighbourhood streets.

This actually makes sense though. There are 3 different sets of public Tennis courts in my neighborhood that were renovated in the last couple years. It costs a lot of money to renovate the foundation. These courts were really beat up, and while I'm sure 99% of the damage is from harsh winter weather, sticks scraping on the concrete finish can also do some damage over time.

No different then skateboarders getting ticketed for treating public/private property like a skate park. The damage is negligible, but over a period of time it still takes a toll. And I'm sure you'd prefer having your tax dollars going towards something else.

I think the streets of Calgary can withstand some hockey sticks just fine though.

Was there a case of a kid getting hit by a car while playing street hockey or something? I can't see how else this by-law could of been passed in the first place.

That is not correct. I think we've had this discussion before; and I don't think we ever got a link to the by-law. Somebody did post a picture to the old signs that used to be near the play structures.

Yes and it was proven in that thread by two posters and here it is again from the city of calgary website:

Dogs are not allowed in:
School grounds
Playgrounds
Sports fields
Golf courses
Cemeteries
Wading or swimming areas

It's the dog and responsible pet ownership bylaw.

I remember a couple times I actually shoveled snow off the road in front of my parents house so I could play.

It says playgrounds, not playground zones. Huge difference.
