City of Calgary tells Broken City to be quiet
http://www.metronews.ca/news/calgary...-be-quiet.html
There’s always that one guy who ruins the party, according to Ward 8 Coun. Evan Woolley.
Woolley’s comments stem from the city’s decision to slap Broken City with a warning notice that says the bar shall not have outdoor speakers on its balcony.
“It’s straight up frustrating,” Woolley said. “If we want a vibrant downtown, is this actually good for the city?”
In late January, Broken City and Last Best Brewing & Distilling hosted the Big Winter Classic, a weekend festival that celebrated local bands and brews.
Adrian Urlacher, who founded the festival, said both bars had paperwork to play until 10 p.m. on the nights of Jan. 28 - 30.
“It’s a really sad thing — I just felt we took every step we could to be on par. It’s counterproductive,” he said.
“From just walking across the street, you couldn’t hear the music from a block away. It wasn’t a raucous or anything.”

Annie Mac is headliner worthy?
She's just a dj.... Doesn't even produce?

Pretty much expected there would be no big headliners this year due to the dollar. I don't see anyone there on the same level as Kygo, Pretty Lights and Skrillex from last year, Subfocus seems to be the only artist close to that level. Really sad that Griz's name isn't up there either.
The rest of the line-up is mostly people who've played the festival before, only a few fresh faces like Snails, Caspa b2b Rusko, Subfocus and Questlove. A solid budget line-up, but tough to get excited about.

What So Not is Flume and another guy. Unfortunately it's more hardcore than Flume's solo stuff so pass.
I'd see Emancipator, Autograf and Boys Noize. That's probably it although I recognize quite a few names.

Boyz Noize is rad. Questlove throws one hell of a party.
Any of you ever go to Shambhala? I've been thinking about it for a few years but have never pulled the trigger. That no booze thing really turns me off. I don't think I'm up for spending a weekend doing drugs in the woods anymore.

As a non party favor consumer who worked it last year, I recommend going at least once. It's an experience I feel everyone should do once. Good vibes.

Yeah I don't think I could do it. Not for a full weekend. Fact of the matter is I doubt I can enjoy such an immersive, hippy experience sober and there's no way I'm doing drugs for 3 days straight.
If they allowed booze and had normal amenities (or had hotels around) I could do it or if it was closer and they sold day passes I'd consider it. Camping in the woods with a bunch of people messed out of their trees while sober sounds like a bad time. The lineup would have to be really special.

I've got four years under my belt. Shambhala is one of the best music festival experiences on the planet and it's right on our doorstep. Some call it a life changing experience, I'd say I found a part of myself there that I really like and it went a long ways to restoring my faith in the essential decency of people.
The no booze makes the festival for me, no fights or broken bottles littering the dance floor. It's easy enough to sneak in a little hard liquor and no one is going to look twice if they see you sipping from a flask. You can get away with pretty much anything at Shambhala as long as your not a jackass about it.
My first year was a drug fueled rager, but every year I become less interested in the drugs and just enjoy the atmosphere and music. Many of my best experiences at the festival were stone cold sober (or ripped on molly).

I'm going to be the crotchety old geezer here for a moment but as I'm getting bombarded with 'oh no not the railway club, that can't close surely?' Messages on Facebook it annoys me that we will happily drop 200 bucks plus to go to some festival in the woods but we can't spend ten bucks to go see a band at the local bar. If things carry on like this there will be no new bands to play these festivals.

Bands have to evolve. The way to get noticed now is through promoting their music on the Internet. It doesn't take much for a good song to get plenty of attention these days. Every genre has youtube channels with hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of subscribers that promote submitted music.
