DIdn't Maloney/Treliving hold firm on Wheeler(/Turris?) in a time before compensation?

Can you prove this? Show me an article that states the Flames sent staff to sign Kenny Agostino.
Not just staff but an assistant GM.

Oh. Maybe Treliving really is in it for the compensatory pick then.
EDIT:
Quote:
“We are very happy with the compensatory pick we will receive for Blake not signing, which will be the fifth pick in the second round. This is a very deep draft and we now have five picks in the first two rounds, which is very exciting.”
|
The Coyotes then traded 39 and 35 for #28OA which ended up becoming Viktor Tikhonov.
Blake Wheeler + 2nd for Viktor Tikhonov.

Was Colborne not a centre coming up as well? I know the Flames have tried him at centre at times. To be honest - wouldn't surprise me if Jankowski followed a similar path as a pro becoming a winger.

I agree with the assessment that, if Treliving holds firm, it is because he is happy with the compensation.

Well, they were 2-3 years older and signed by the previous regime. I could see Treliving trying to break this trend/expectation of giving every single college prospect games and burning a year unless he truly believes in their potential (ie Gillies).

Why can't he do that in the AHL?
Another thing about Jankowski is that he actually skipped a level of hockey. He went from a low level high school league to college when he should have went to to the USHL. He likely would have put up better college numbers if he had went to the USHL first. He needs to realize he is still young and that his body more than anything needs the development time.

Yes he was, but he wasn't very good. Took all of one game of Colborne as a Flame to know he should be shifted to the wing. Think Jankowski has the smarts and defensive acumen to make it in the middle.

Janko's in that same class of player, not sure why anyone would be fine with getting nothing for him. A late 2nd is not a good return at all.

Every team has lots of these types of prospects. Shinkaruk only fetched Granlund who, IMO, is not worth a 2nd.
|
I agree that a 2nd is probably all you get for any of them, but that is why prospects aren't traded usually, unless the team is doubting their progress.
Imagine if the team just kept trading their prospects for 2nds - where would that get you?
What a prospect would return in trade is not necessarily the same as what their value is to the team.
Shinkaruk, Poirier and Jankowski have about the same chance of becoming an NHL regular. In all likelihood, only one of them will (that's about their odds).
But that's why you want to have several of them. Throwing Jankowski back int the lake and fishing for another 2nd is non-productive.

Not crazy in the slightest. Those of us that have been watching his games over the years, and not just his stats, have said he could fill that role very well. A big, smart, defensively aware center behind Monahan and Bennett is a huge benefit for the team. That's where I think he shakes out when he signs.

These guys got a NHL game and a burn off of their ELC because they were 3 months away (their choice) from being UFA's with no compensation for the Flames at all.
They also signed Van Brabrant as a UFA and played him 6 games. That was to entice him to sign with the Flames rather than another team.
The 6-8 NHL games at 900K was the equivalent of a 90K extra signing bonus.... more than a full year in the AHL.
At the time the Flames had no cap worries and these guys were part of the Flames tanking for a better draft pick strategy.
After Gaudreau being a RFA a year early and Bennett coming up next year rather than the year after and the Flames being close to the cap it is definitely to the Flames advantage not to want to burn a year of Jankowski's ELC ... on the off chance that in 2 years he is a legit NHLer.

I still think he has top 6 upside. We could be a team with three or four #2/#1 centers that has to shift one or two to the wing like the Sharks have with Marleau and Pavelski to keep the most talent in the top 6.

Wasn't Otto a defensive dynamo? Arguably the best faceoff guy in the league. Or up there with Oates, Francis and Desjardins?
Anyway, Otto was an absolute beast. Of course one hopes Janko could become an Otto type player.
I'm a little behind in the thread though. Can someone give me the Coles notes of what's actually going on? Or is this all speculation that if Janko doesn't sign in the next 24 hrs, he isn't signing with the Flames? Has anyone in the know actually said this or is this a CP panic thread?

Is Jankowski's ceiling higher than Backlund? We're talking about him replacing Backlund essentially.

I'm not going to put a ceiling on him, but Jankowski can be Backlund with better reach to protect the puck, a more accurate shot from 20+ feet out, better/quicker hands in tight, and better on faceoffs.

Every time I get a chance to see Jankowski, I come away fairly impressed. I thought he controlled the PP very well in the last game, and I was even more impressed with how he came back on defence and seemed to just be in the right place at the right time.
Now, I am not sure if he will become "Joel Otto" - Otto was a heck of a lot more tenacious. I don't agree that he will become Colborne either though - Jankowski's IQ seems a few steps higher and he just anticipates so well.
I am of the opinion that if you put Jankowski with one or two skilled wingers, he can create a lot with his passing and vision. Kid is a very, very good playmaker, and I think most of you will be surprised by how good.
Looking at the Flames, and seeing Backlund really stepping up again and becoming that hugely dependable 3rd line center with his non-stop motor, I think Jankowski eventually settles-in on one of the scoring lines as a winger. Maybe LW on Bennett's line, or RW on the Gaudreau/Monahan line.
Kid has wheels too, and can keep up to them. He is a bit like Jagr - he is big, so it looks like he isn't moving since his strides are so long, but he moves extremely well. Best to compare his speed to other players on the ice, rather than looking at his strides. Big guys sometimes look really slow, but seem to just get there faster. That's Jankowski. He also uses his reach and anticipation to just get in the way, and he can pass/shoot around guys.
I still think he signs with the Flames. Of course he wants to play in the NHL right away - every kid wants that, and Jankowski has done everything asked of him to this point. He can also point out all the other players that the Flames have signed - players that the Flames didn't invest too much in as well - and just pressure them to make it happen. Heck, I would if I was him. At this point, he does have all the control.
I think the Flames would have to get really lucky on their 2nd round pick in order to find someone better than him, plus would need to wait a few more years on top of that. I would be surprised if Jankowski refuses to sign with the Flames - but if he does, it will still be interesting to see how he does in the NHL. I still think he will be a very good player in the long run.

Conversely, by burning a year of his contract, he will be up for his 2nd contract after next season. That way, he more than likely ends up with a much cheaper one. That buys the Flames 2 or 3 more years at a bargain basement price.
