Seems silly for a prospect that is nowhere near a surefire NHL'er to want to burn a year of his contract. It's probably more likely for a 2nd tier prospect like him to be dropped than reupped once his contract expires. Assuming some big raise in two years time seems pretty cocky. If I was in his position I'd prefer to have an extra year to try and make my case.

This is the dumbest reasoning ever.

MAYBE Jankowski wants to have a day or two to spend with teammates, friends or family before signing and moving his life to Calgary or Stockton. MAYBE he has a final exam to take care of before he can pass a class. MAYBE he's still very sick and isn't in a rush to sign.

Once he signs he has to report to either the NHL or AHL. Are you guys not realizing this or just ignoring it?

Until there is a news update nothing has changed. Time passing doesn't have anything to do with whether or not Jankowski will sign.

That's over-simplifying it. This isn't a contract negotiation during the dog days of summer. This is a negotiation that, with each day that passes without a deal, Jankowski is missing hockey games. Considering we've only got 7 left, I'm of the opinion that every day that passes without a deal is a big red flag.

We're still not at the end of the 48 hour period that was mentioned on HNIC.

I'm pretty confident that he will be signed. But I won't be too disappointed if he doesn't.

I'd be pretty disappointed if we didn't sign one of our top prospects.

Well he wouldn't be playing games while he's so ill that he needs an IV. Give the kid a day or two to get well, holy Moses!

My main disappoint would stem from the optics of a draft pick refusing to sign with us, but as I've mentioned, I think the 51st pick next year is fair compensation.

I'm with FDW this topic has gone ditch completely.

A poster thinks that they have proof that Treviling is being petty? That is insane.

I'll never hire many of you to negotiate my next house deal, I can't imagine how that would go.

Personally I think Treliving played it well. Jankowski needed a solid 4th year to have his value at a 2nd round pick. If he didn't progress again then taking the 2nd might have been Trevliving's angle. Had a good year, now he sees him as at least equal value to the 2nd and more developed so you work out a deal.

Would you guys honestly want a GM that showed up at the kid's house in tears offering everything right up front and than whaling and moaning if the kid doesn't sign?

Let this stuff run it's course ...

Would anyone be pissed if Shinkaruk walked without a return? Poirier? Kylington? Andersson? Hickey?

Janko's in that same class of player, not sure why anyone would be fine with getting nothing for him. A late 2nd is not a good return at all.

Exactly. The Flames made the choice that was best for his development. They sent him back to college with the intention of him being a leader and the go to guy on the team. That makes much more sense than sending him to the AHL where there is a good chance he would be low on the depth chart and struggled. It makes more sense to give him the best possible chance to improve and succeed and risk losing him than to ensure you keep him and stunt his development. Treliving is trying to make the best out of what he was handed. We all know he was a project so keep him on his projected path.

I'm not flipping out by any means, but I'm also not going to understate the importance of getting a contract signed soon.

Me too. Unless he is demanding an NHL roster spot next year, it makes sense to sign him. The 51st pick should be the floor for his value; that is in the bag, assuming we give him a bona fide offer. I like Janko as a prospect, but even if they sign and trade him over the summer (a bit of a crap move, to be sure), it is managing that asset as best as they can.

I'm not saying that is my opinion... Only saying that IF that is the hangup, I think it's pretty clear what the end game is here.
No all it says is that Treliving and the Flames think that it would be in the best interests of the PLAYER to spend time in the AHL this year as opposed to the NHL. What good does it do Jankowski to play in the NHL this year? He gets what? 1 or 2 games and with the way Hartley works, he'll play like 5 minutes. How is that going to help him? The better thing for his development is to go to the AHL and develop. As Conroy said, Jankowski's pace of play is too slow, so why throw him into the fastest league? Take the next obvious step, the AHL.

I'm sure that if the Flames had their way, Gillies would have gone to the AHL first last year too and played some games rather than sit in the press box in the NHL. He and his agent just made it clear from the start that they want him to burn the year. The reality is, burning a year is not good for players who need further development. It's great for a guy like Gaudreau or Vessey who will be impact guys in a short period, but for guys like Gillies and Jankowski, the AHL is the best option.

All throughout Treliving's reign, he has handle Jankowski properly and in the best interests of the player. If Jankowski feels "slighted" that he was sent back to College or that the Flames think he should go to the AHL, then that is a mark on his own character and is no fault of Treliving.

The reality is Jankowski is not ready for the NHL. He put up respectable numbers this year, but nothing that suggests he's ready to step into the NHL. He barely cleared a ppg, if not for a late season 4 point game in a blowout.

I don't think everyone would agree that Jankowski is in that same class. I see him more in the Agostino, Shore, Knight and Arnold class of prospects. I would gladly be wrong, but only time will tell.

You can't even mention Jankowski's name without being jumped on in this thread.

Personally and this is only my opinion I think Treliving purposely offers him a contract he knows Jankowski won't sign and would rather have that second round pick. Jump all over this post if you wish but I think that's what's going to happen.

We have the following young LHD developing:

Jokipakka (NHL)
Wotherspoon (Pending RFA)
Kulak (ELC)
Culkin (ELC)
Kylington (ELC)
Sieloff (ELC)
Kanzig (ELC)
Gilmour (Unsigned)
Hickey (Unsigned)
Ollas-Mattsson (Unsigned)
Rafikov (Unsigned)

And we may potentially draft a guy like Sergachev/Chychrun/Juolevi/Bean if that's the BPA in the first round this year. I don't see why it's out of the question that they pick a couple to cut bait with, and Gilmour is the oldest of the bunch, and the smallest. Sieloff and Kanzig might be the worst, but they're both signed for another year and two years respectively.

I like Gilmour and I'm one of his fans on this board. I want him signed. I'm just pointing out what's possible, not what's actual.
But your dividing the conversation now. I suggested not being concerned with the Jankow time line because Gilmour is basically pending. There are many D you listed that we wouldn't blink at if we signed Gilmour in favor of. Suggesting that it's a possibility Gilmour isn't offered a contract as a counter to my original point doesn't really discount the point. Even more so when you've just confirmed you feel he should be signed -as a fan-. The jumping to conclusions is based on the original thoughts on Jankow. My personal opinion is that all the concern with Jankow signing is jumping to conclusions, it's still within the 48hrs, Jankow was sick in his last game, Gilmour hasn't signed or officially "not been given an offer"... so meh seems like there is unnecessary panic regarding Jankow.

It does him some potential good. It gives him a chance to try and prove the doubters in the organization that he can play at this level and maybe even be notably effective. Prove he doesn't need an AHL year by having a strong showing. Bump himself up on the depth chart come training camp in September.
