Let him prove his worth. Maybe in the end he becomes a better version of Backlund and takes that #3 spot. Who knows, that's the point. I would rather give him a shot then take a pick 10/10 times considering all the above and more.
His scoring is under rated. He was the highest scoring Friar in a decade. That says something. What you said about check boxes is right on the money. The only check box I think he's missing is aggression box. Beyond that, check boxes across the board.

Is Colborne worth more than a 2nd round pick?

Have i missed something? Where has the GM said he won't budge on "burning a year"? I get what he would like, but i'm pretty sure he will cave if he had to.

Said in another post, if Janko does not sign, then he was never going to sign.

I gotta laugh at the people thinking that 2017 2nd rounder looks pretty good. You really want to toss away a 6'4 200 pound center that has great hands, is a very good skater, and has was the go-to guy for the best defensive team in college hockey for the past four years, for an unknown draft pick? Hey, maybe that draft pick will turn into a 6'4 200 pound center in five years! All you're suggesting is turning that 21st pick in 2012 into a 7-9 year development window to see if it bears fruit. I know, but it could be a boat!
I'm sure Feaster would have signed him after his junior year but Treliving is trying to properly handle his prospects. If he doesn't get him signed, Feaster has to take some of the blame for drafting a first rounder who is so slow to develop, putting the Flames in this position.

Are you of the opinion that the Flames should hope Janko wants to test free agency? (Sorry if you stated that earlier I haven't read the whole thread)

From what I can tell those comments you listed are all speculation from posters.....

In my view, Flames should sign him.... all assets are important.

Last thing they want is having a College player choose not to sign

The crew on FAN960 seem sure that's it. FWIW.

2nd Jankowski teammate signing since the Friars have been eliminated. Mingoia was Jankowski's right winger for most of this season.

Albany Devils @AlbanyDevils
[BREAKING] The #ADevils have signed Trevor Mingoia out of @FriarsHockey to an ATO

Yup. Flames have been patient and put in the time with him. It's now time to hopefully seek the reward. That said i do think the compensation reward for him is fair value. I still rather have Janko though. He is a big center that could become a nice replacement for Backlund when its time for Backlund wanting the bigger bucks on re-signing.

If I'm Treliving, I have no problem giving Jankowski a game or two in the NHL if he wants it. But I doubt very much that a game or two is the sticking point. I'm sure Jankowski and his agent are more concerned with where he slot sin next season and whether or not he'll be buried in the AHL. That and maximizing his ELC.

Nope. This is all on Treliving. Just like the three headed goaltending mess he created, this is a decision he manufactured. The player wanted to sign last summer and Treliving pushed that decision out a year. That is all on him. Once Jay Feaster was fired all decision making went through Treliving's office. He is fully accountable. And get the #### over the draft pick. It's four years ago and it isn't changing.

I think I definitely prefer Jankowski over a 2nd but at least that seems like fair value. Isn't like it's Gaudreau for a 2nd.

I will be placing full blame on Feaster though if he doesn't sign.

Jankowski is just turning pro and will play his first pro season at 22. In 4 years will he be where Colborne is today?
They are both tall, and both went to college. But that doesn't mean they'll have the same career.

Joel Otto was also tall and went to college. He didn't start his NHL career until he was 23. Things worked out okay.

Buried in the AHL?

The AHL is probably exactly what Jankowski needs. He barely put up a point per game in his 4th college season. He's not an NHLer right now.

AHL should be the expectation for next season.

And if he doesn't sign, those who want to blame this on Treliving are completely out to lunch. Jankowski wasn't even close to being ready for professional hockey last year.

If he decides to become a free agent (and likely join the Canucks) all that really means is the Flames may need to hold on to Backlund past his current deal which in a salary capped league isn't as desirable as replacing him with a player on an entry level deal but it won't be the end of the world or set this team back. It's not like he's going to haunt the Flames as a member of the Canucks as he's not an elite talent.
That's my take as well. He is not a tier 1 prospect IMO, so if he is playing hardball, I wouldn't shed a tear for getting the compensatory pick, and finding a different way to fill that gap.

Obviously no one knows for sure how his career will go and I could be wrong, but I have my doubts that he will be an impact NHL player.

I think they are wrong. It isn't much of a story if he signs. Much more interesting from a media standpoint if he bolts (think: Every Francis article).

Obviously, I have no inside information, but I think he signs in the next day or so. The Flames gave him his shot, provided development and I would hope he has some buddies from the development camp. His opportunity here is just as good as anywhere else, in my opinion as well.

Fully agree. I think Janko should be in the AHL next year. If he does not think so then a team like Vancouver and Toronto would probably have no problem telling him he will have a spot in the NHL next year. As much as i want him to sign, the Flames can not guarantee him a spot next season.
