I guess technically you could trade your first round pick, therefore not selecting someone in the first round, with your first round pick? Maybe that's what its meant to mean........but I doubt

I think I like Jankowski but the worst case scenario is that he never plays a single NHL game.

The only way that happens is if he dies in a plane crash on the way to the next game. What he'll be at the next level is an open question, but if he signs, he'll make his NHL debut next week.

That's the worst case scenario for Laine, Matthews, Puljujarvi, and Dubois too. So it means nothing.

So, what about this has to do with Jankowski? I assume sharkov's signature has something to do with Jankowski since he has posted in a thread about Jankowski his hope of possibly changing it.

I would guess sharkov thinks the Flames took a non-first round player, someone "off the board", with their first round pick.

Jankowski was ranked at #14 (Craig Button TSN), #28 (Kyle Woodlief, Red Line Report, and 15th on their Mock Draft), #37 (McKeen's), and #36 (Hockey Prospectus).
You would think he was ranked #145 by all these publications to have sig like that.

Based on how some people have acted, you'd think he was some unranked kid that Weisbrod just saw playing street hockey one day.

Like when the Oilers took Jesse Ninimakki, the 50th-ranked European player, 15th overall.
And not as big a reach as Derek Morris who was ranked 85th North American Skater when the Flames took him 13th overall.
I think that the reason people get their back up about Jankowski is because of the "we're smarter than everybody" Flames regime at the time throwing out ridiculous claims like best player of the draft and that he's Joe Nieuwendyk. Nothing against Jankowski who was probably an ok pick in a terrible draft year.

There were several issues with the pick itself at the time. Olli Maata was falling fast and was still available at 21 (he was going around 14 where the Flames picked in several mocks). The fact the Flames as an organization preached the need to get younger while still trying to win with Iggy and Kipper yet draft a 5+ year project pick. Things got worse when Feaster and Weisbroad spoke to the media saying they got the best player in the draft.
Where the organization was at the time it really was a head scratcher and the overhype just made everyone roll their eyes. Looking at the Feaster era the Jankowski pick, playoff guarantees, RoR offer sheet, and Iginla trade really helped cement the entire organization as a laughing stock basically from the Phaneuf trade in the Sutter era until Burke was hired

IIRC he was generally ranked somewhere in the 2nd round. Button having him at 14 was just a coincidence I guess as that was where the Flames drafting position was and was part of the idea that Craig's list could be influenced by his brother. It makes it easier to defend the pick by posters like you as Craig had him listed in the first. I believe it was even discussed here before the draft that Jankowski became a favourite as a Flames pick because of Craig having him in our draft spot.
As for the idea that another team would have taken him in the first round, that's what Feaster said, yeah.
Having said all that, I hope he signs and I'll cheer for him to do well as he's still an asset we may be able to use. I'm not that impressed with him but he beats waiting another 5 or 6 years for a 2nd rounder to be of some possible use.

Eh... I was butt hurt at the time because we had no centre prospects and we passed on Teuvo Terravainen. Now that we have Mony and Benzo, I don't mind the pick at all

To everyone saying ‘OMG we could’ve picked Olli Maatta’, where exactly would he fit in on our defense?
On the second pairing, with Hamilton? That’d put Jokipakka at 5th.
I’m actually happier with Jyrki, because I think he has less of a chance to be picked in an expansion draft. Olli would beg gone for sure.

You want to use the alternate universe argument. With Maatta we may not have traded for Hamilton and so had last years picks.

At the time, during the 2012 draft, our defensive core was mediocre at best. We needed some young defencemen on our team, but things have changed dramatically since. That was why people wanted Maata.
