Good point. We've signed so many college kids with "play one game, burn one year" deals lately that I completely forgot the general standard with junior players is "go to AHL on ATO, we'll see you in camp next year".

Mangiapane was one of the top offensive forces in the OHL to end his season, 1.03 gpg and 2.12ppg over the last 3 months of the season.

AFAIK the Flames' contract number is 46. This gives us room to sign/burn Jankowski, Gilmour and two more players this season.

Mangiapane slides until next season as he is still 19.

Then on July 1st we should lose the contracts of:

Hiller
Backstrom
Ramo

(minus three)

and potentially, if they choose not to re-sign/qualify:
Ortio
Nakladal
Wotherspoon
Jooris
Colborne
Grant
Hamilton
Agostino
Poulin
Elson
Van Brabant
Shore
Arnold

(minus upwards of 13)

I assumed that the timing of the contract was so that he would have a chance to join the Heat if they make the playoffs and Barrie is eliminated.

Of course, the Heat aren't helping themselves by getting shut out by the last-place team in the league while they're chasing a spot and Barrie's season has better odds of lasting longer, so you're almost certainly right.

So, considering his 104 points last year got him drafted in the sixth round, what has got everyone so excited about his season this time around?

Same thing oh wet blanket Sabres man. Most people are being pretty reserved about him regardless so that's a pretty disingenuous post to start.

He was passed over his first draft for whatever reasons, OHL rookie, low numbers, played low in the lineup. Last season he really exploded but obviously teams were still reserved but he eventually won't in the 6th round. The fact that he continued those high numbers is exciting.

Still plenty of question marks, can he translate his game to pro? No one knows, but anytime a player puts up big points people get talkative. Nothing strange.

For me... repeatability. One great season you can write off as a flash in the pan aberration, two? Not so much.

Speaking of pro contract / expansion draft protection stuff, does a player burn a year of pro status if he plays less than 10 NHL games and got sent back down to juniors?

And we didn't puck in the first round!

Andrew Mangiapane and Rasmus Andersson should join Kylington in the AHL next season.

Probably see him in the AHL next year to start, will be a better indicator of how he'll be as a pro.

Think I get it now. I was including the three contracts with junior players that slide another year (MacDonald, Schneider, Andersson) in the total # of contracts. I guess they don't count towards the 50 unless and until they play pro.

For purposes of an expansion draft, if a junior player's contract slides, it doesn't count as a year of pro status.

That is, the NHL thinks maybe kinda sorta could be possibly this is the rule that they might perhaps take a flyer on thinking about conceivably going with. At this point in time. Until other factors rise, or the situation changes, or new events occur, or you know, they just change their mind.

They think.

After all, this is the NHL. They are not an organization that likes to prematurely carve things in stone. Or sand. Or pudding.

For starters, because he's not an offensive player. He's a grinder and any stats are a bonus. Not that there's anything to complain about in his stats:

The dummy that's on the Fan described Mangiapane as 5'5" when talking about this signing.

He's listed as 5'10"...
