I think what polak meant was guys will sometimes take the lesser deal coming out of their ELC so they can cash in huge when their 1st real deal expires and they are about 25 years old. Some people were arguing Ferland should do that, so he can cash in huge on his next deal.
That is a cocky attitude to have, I agree with polak. Ferland was right to sign a multiyear deal.

This is such a tired and misguided argument.
In the last 5 years (all playing against guys much bigger and older than him), how many games has he missed due to injury?

He will stay, I don't really have any doubts about that.
I think the best the Flames are going to possibly do is 8 years, $56 million.
But I expect it to be more like $60-64 million.

I think his actual value is 8x8.25 or so. But with the RFA years included there, I'd say a 7m AAV seems plausible.

I say we brace ourselves for an 8 x $8.5 million deal.

If he were a UFA it wouldn't be bad, but as an RFA it'd screw up the entire team cap situation. That's why you DO the long-term contract right out of the gate, to bring the AAV down by buying RFA years off the player at a discount.
If they're willing to deal with a higher cap hit, they should just bridge him, but that's a bad idea given where the team is at as a whole (they don't need to trade lower AAV short term for higher AAV later, because they're not winning the cup in the next 2 years regardless). Erik Karlsson sitting at a $6.5m aav hit and PK Subban sitting at 9 is a good example of the fork in the road here.

Half the deal is for RFA years - no way the AAV is that high.

Francis is just getting more and more annoying
This stir up crap article
Previously the one about refs calling more penalties against Calgary post Wideman
Maybe he should just go full time into the resturant business.
I cant believe anyone in Flames management respecting him as a credible journalist and giving him straightforward info and tips

Confused the #### out of me until I realized you were referencing David Jones haha.
No connection, just a coincidence.

$1M is a huge difference. Imagine if Giordano's deal was $7.75 per instead of $6.75 per. Imagine if Frolik was $5.3M instead of $4.3M
I think it will be at least $1M off. And yes. I'll take that bet. (over/under of $7.5M, I'll take the under).

I can't see any reason his contact would be lower than Tarasenko.
Coming off ELC? Check. Better counting stats? Check
Where's the comparable for lower? Tarasenko is the closest and most recent, and there's good reason to get more than he did

Does it really matter at this point? He's a top 10 scorer in the league. He's worth what he's worth and the team needs to pay him accordingly. How do you justify his AAV being any lower when he's producing like he is compared to his peers?
