So, we are looking for some good places to do some kayak fishing to catch some big pike. Any suggestions for places within a reasonable distance from Calgary and might have a near by campground?

We have been looking at some reservoirs between Lethbridge and Med Hat but I think some tips from CP might help us figure out a few good places to go.

Chin reservoir is a favourite for sport fishing, about a 15 min drive south of Taber.

Sherbourne lake is south of Grassy Lake, it's also pretty popular.

Has anyone been fishing in the bow lately?
My boyfriend has been using spoons down by bonnybrook bridge and having some luck catching some Browns. Tried fly fishing but wasn't having as much luck.

I haven't been fishing the Bow lately, but I would think that you would have to be nymphing to catch fish. I would use a firebead nymph and I think that would work at this time of year, and probably a double nymph rig in general. Either that or if it seems promising then I would try some midges.

Really if it were up to me though I would be fishing streamers and especially if you are having luck at all with spoons. I'm not big on nymphing and I recently got a spey rod, so when time permits I'll be down there trying my luck with that.

You probably do, and I was just trying to give a few suggestions in case that guy wanted to try to get some on the fly. I wasn't trying to come off as a know-it-all because I'm certainly far from that!

The Bow is fishing so good. As Slava said try a nymph rig (copper John, worm, emerger type) , I use a couple of split shots to get it down faster for more of a drift. The biggest fish I've netted in the past two months (not mine) were on streamers (white seem to be working), give that a go as well. What are spoons? I can gts,nm.

Ya, the next time I am out I'll do some nymphing. I had a few nibbles on sunday afternoon on that rig but no action. Some guys were catching trout on little silver buzz bombs. The key was getting the lure or fly deep. So that is key.

I'll try some streamers too, maybe tomorrow after work or something.

This weekend we were thinking of going camping. I will be cold but we just want to get out early this year. We are going to chain lakes, just because we haven't been there in years and we wanted to check it out. Does anyone here know if the lake is still partially frozen or what we should be using? We don't have any boats or anything so we will be fishing from the shore.

I'm not sure but I think Chain Lakes would still be frozen? Isn't Glenmore Reservoir still iced up?

I haven't been down there, but almost surely its partly open. The ice-fishing was good there though, and you could catch a lot of little trout there pretty easily.

Went on Saturday March 5 Ice is 8 to 10" thick Caught our limit again in 1.5 hrs Green trout pellets 10 feet down approx size of fish was 10 to 12".

That's from iFish Alberta for Chain Lakes Reservoir. So unless it has melted significantly I'm thinking its still frozen.

Ya, we figured it would still be frozen. I found a couple posts online saying the ice was still about 10" thick on March 5th. We will bring our stuff and see how it goes. Hopefully there will be some open spots but no biggie if we can't do some fishing on there. Plenty of outdoorsy things to do.

Oh wow, that's surprising to me. I fished down by Pincher Creek a couple weeks ago and everything was gone. I know that is further south and they get more of a chinook wind and all that, but even so its been really warm. I know I would be too scared to drive out on the ice at this point!

Oh, we won't be driving on the ice, that is for sure! We will check it out and provide some updates. Hopefully there are a few bare spots so we can at least try to catch some of those little trout.

Ice is 12 to 18" thick .... Watch out around shore as one person fell through today. Caught 12 trout two over 12" the rest 8 - 10" was there from 8am till 2:30. Caught majority on green trout nibblets. A few on worms. 10 to 15' deep.

I was out today, there is enough ice to walk out on, no trucks. Fish were hitting on shrimp. Tried pink powerbait, and corn but not much action. Shrimp was good.

Have fun but be careful which it sounds like you are taking necessary precautions.

Just read you are reading the posts already from iFish Alberta. I think your plan is probably perfect take the rods and see.

A friend and I are going camping this weekend, thinking along the trunk road west of water valley. Anyone know any decent streams in the area, and would they still have ice right now?

Not sure if headwaters and tributaries are open yet? Sorry I can't say for sure but I'd check to make sure it's open where you want to go.

Edit: sorry I'm not familiar with that area.

Not open until April 1st:

Generally streams open April 1st north of the Bow (ES2), and June 16th south of the Bow (ES1).

This has to do with when the resident trout are spawning.
