The interview really shows that the Flames want one of those 2 Finnish players

And then trade Monahan for the other Finn?

No thanks. I'd rather have Monahan and Matthews, and there is no way Strome would be on the table IMO.

Haha poor Conroy.
It was funny how long Conny was going on about Edmonton's incompetence. Boomer had to stop him after a while.

While we're living in fantasyland, my dream scenario and i know these trades are highly unlikely, never mind the odds the lottery ends up like this:
Draft order is:
1. Cgy
2. Edm
3. Ari
-We trade 1st overall to Coyotes for #3 and OEL
-Then trade OEL to Oilers for #2 and one of their previous rebuild golden boys like Eberle or Yak
-Then ship that player to the Isles for Hamonic
-Draft the 2 Fins with the #2 and #3 picks
Walk away with the Fins and Hamonic after it's all said and done. Only downside is the Oilers get the dman they badly need and division rival Coyotes get a potential franchise center but we fill 3 big needs in the process.

hahaha no way the yotes trade OEL for anyone we have, probably not even Gaudreau, let alone to move up two spots.
He's their most important player. Would you trade Brodie?

If we somehow snagged OEL and the #3, why would we trade them?

that's why i said fantasyland and dream.
The beauty with winning the lottery and having the #1 pick is you are in the drivers seat and only trade down if someone massively overpays and the only team i think that would even consider that is Arizona.
Barring the big overpayment you just take Matthews and smile but you certainly don't trade down just for a late 1st rounder or B level prospect.

Because it's like nhl16. Just keep trading up until we have all the best players.

Perhaps a little OT, but an Oiler fan friend of mine said that if they get the 1st overall again this year he would trade it straight up for OEL. Arizona drafts Matthews, and the Oilers get the franchise d-man they sorely need.
One problem though, I can't imagine that Arizona would give up OEL, even for Matthews. Their defense is atrocious without OEL, and I don't know of any prospects they have in the pipe that would be able to replace his minutes.
I kind of dismissed his proposal immediately, because hey...he's an Oilers fan and they're stupid, but is this far-fetched? Can anyone see this happening?

No, it would never happen due to the reasons you outlined. The only thing keeping the Coyotes from having an Oiler-esque defense is OEL. They would be literally stupid to trade him, even for Matthews. The fact that the two teams are divisional rivals complicate the situation even more. Phoenix would be much better off trading from their abundance of young forwards to get more defense, and I think that's exactly what they will do.

Honestly its hard to say what Arizona would trade. They are in a different situation than most teams.
If they feel that Matthews as a home town star can bring in a bunch of fans and drive interest in a market that has basically rejected them, he has more value than OEL. It may not be a smart hockey move, but if Matthews is the difference between the owner losing $10M and breaking even, they just may do it.

Take OEL out and you're probably looking at a 60 point team, even with Matthews. I imagine that Arizona is aware that winning will sell tickets better than 'having Matthews' and aren't likely to sabotage themselves just because the kid happened to be born in Arizona.
I really feel that any interest Arizona would have in such a move is being overstated in this thread. Their organizational strength is up front and they are beyond weak on the blueline and in goal, I just don't see them doing this.

It is hard to believe that a local boy would make that much of a difference in Arizona.
Obviously there will be a novelty of having a local boy star of the team, but if the team doesn't start making some serious strides forward before the novelty wears off, then it is all for naught.

Agreed. It would effectively be like having some home grown star on the Roughnecks. Some would care, most just still never will.

Given the popularity of hockey in Arizona, it would be more like having a local Calgary player on the Calgary Crush.

Plus Tippett would ruin him with the system he coaches and would focus on his defensive game to make sure he's a complete two way player.
