I hope he gives retirement some serious thought. He's been very lucky so far.

Good news for an unlucky guy.

Couldn't agree more. This is related to his last serious injury, right?

Wow he's only 30? For some reason I thought he was a lot older then that.

			Really good to hear.
I really liked the trade at the time but man has he had some back luck since joining. As much as I am Smid fan I really hope he retires. 30 years old and battling these neck injuries is going to cause some serious long term damage.

Great news he's okay but please retire for crying out loud! I'm not saying this because I want to get him of the roster but because the guy has made his money and it seems his neck issues are reoccurring. I get that he has passion to play but I would hope he really considers life after hockey and being able to live it to the fullest.

Just because he doesn't need surgery it doesn't mean he isn't one big hit or awkward fall into the boards away from a life threatening injury. It's at the point where playing any longer should be considered reckless. He should either retire or be forced into retirement.

Players with guaranteed contracts don't retire anymore, there's no incentive. Guys like Ohlund, Pronger and Horton have just moved on with their lives and continued to collect their paycheques... while sitting on LTIR.

Thats really it. He won't retire, but the Flames also will get cap relief for it so its win/win.

I guess guys don't really retire but the LTIR thing is just as good. I just think it's in everyone's best interest if Smid doesn't play hockey at a professional level anymore.

That hit he took didn't look like all that much to me. I originally thought it was an arm/shoulder injury but I guess the neck could make sense. I wonder if the surgery would be fusion? Seems pretty unstable in there.

IIRC he's already had a fusion done.

A second neck fusion would likely spell the end of his hockey career.

Laddy, you've been a true soldier for us, but please retire. Another injury to your neck would be terrible.
You've managed to have a long, prestigious NHL career with two teams with huge fanbases. Go out on top!

Laddy, please forego your career and all your personal aspirations and just do what a few selfish fans want you to do.
 That'd be great, thanks.

How exactly are we selfish?

He's in great danger of a potentially life-altering neck injury if he goes back.

Are you his doctor? If he plays again, it will be because the doctors said it was okay.

Fans saying they are concerned for his well being are more likely to simply be hiding behind that IMO.

He may not need surgery but now you're talking about a series of neck injuries.
 Yikes.

Forgive me if I trust the doctor's opinion over yours.

If Flames doctors won't clear him, he'll go on LITR. They won't clear him if he's at a great risk of a life altering injury.
