There is merit there but it's not like over the past decade we haven't seen the majority of Canadian teams in the dumps with only one Canadian team making the playoffs in 2014 and a more than a few instances where only two Canadian teams made it. Ratings were nowhere near this poor in those instances. I do truly believe the problem is compounded because most Canadians don't like RSN's hockey presentation. I haven't heard a single fan say they like things better now than before the NHL gave RSN the monopoly. It really doesn't take much to get fans to tune out and RSN's presentation and sandpaper personalities are well enough in some instances.
I'm not happy that the Flames stink but I am happy that the rest of the Canadian teams also stink (I'm bitter like that when it comes to other Canadian fans as if I can't be happy, neither should they) and I'm happy that Rogers is getting what they deserve as there's a reason that people all over the country gasped when the news of the deal came out and that's because it was an incredibly foolish deal for Rogers and also a bad deal for Canadians that mostly all preferred TSN and CBC.
The bottom line is that Canadians never deserved this 12 year deal of being forced to settle for a 2nd tier product but Rogers fully deserves what's coming to them. Sorry Rogers you get no sympathy from me as you are getting what you deserve.

I'm curious as to why intermission panels have to have so many people. Seems like you could save a boatload of money not having 8 people (Strombo, Kypreos, Hrudey, Freidman, Cox, Sophia - social media person who reads tweets with the super long last name, McLean and Cherry for Coach's Corner) or whatever Sportsnet has on an average HNIC broadcast (and that doesn't count the person on site doing the interview each intermission).

It's just a bad product. Flames games are ok but the rest are garbage.
For example a few weeks ago the Flyers were playing Toronto on Sat night and I wanted to watch some of it cause I had never seen this Ghost-Bear guy play and he was on a 14 game scoring streak.
But then I'd have to listen to Glen Healy.

By having different people you're having a change in content without actually having a change in content. Ultimately all those people are talking about the same thing, everyday, for full broadcasts. If all you heard was one person, it gets boring quickly.
One person shows are seen in talk radios. Last time I checked, talk radio wasn't popular.

Just awful by SN hiring that tool.

I see a lot of displeasure with Stroumboulopoulos. I don't understand why. Can anybody enlighten me?

I actually like Kypreos, and shockingly starting to warm up to MacLean. However, Healy and Cox have become more unbearable every single time I see them. Why did they take these guys??
I really do think ratings are down because Canadian teams are having trouble in the standings. I don't think there is too much more to it than that.
Perhaps with the economic climate, some people have downgraded their cable packages? Hardcore fans probably won't, but especially families that are having a tough time getting by have perhaps downgraded? Possible anyways.

You guys are right, Kypreos and Maclean aren't as bad as Cox and Healey. But everybody is better than Cox and Healey, those along with Greg Millen are the worst hockey broadcasters I've watched in my 20 years of watching hockey.

Right now I'm more interested in the Blue Jays than I am the Flames.
A year ago that sentence would have been unfathomable. The last time I cared about the Blue Jays or baseball was the 90s. But, the hype around them started to grow and I watched a game and it was freaking awesome and here we are.

I think they should go wall-to-wall on Saturdays, all on one channel. There should be a Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa or Eastern US city game on at 2pm Eastern (noon local). Then there should be a Winnipeg or other US Central, or Eastern time zone, or Western matinee game followed by your main event (5:00 local works for anytime zone really) followed by your nightcap from Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver or Pacific/Mountain time zone US city.
I think the NHL should try to capture the NFL Sunday thing on Saturdays.
Since it's all on one channel you can cut a lot of the crap and stick with your studio guys all day long.

unfortunately only the 7pm ET time slot gets ratings in Toronto.
Flames should secure the Sat afternoon timeslot if they want to be on national tv more instead of having to share the 10pm slot with Edmonton and Vancouver

Are the Flames more concerned about national TV ratings than they are about the preferences of their paying fans?

Saturday/Sunday afternoon games aren't bad. Good for families.
Hitman play in the afternoon all the time.

Different demographic.
Afternoon games in the NHL are horrible. And if the Flames considered making it a regular thing, I would be telling them in no uncertain terms how little I would appreciate it.

The Hitmen are geared towards families. Flames? Too rich for most families, the vast majority of the audience is working adults.
We have the last decade or two of information available to know that afternoon games suck in this market and the Flames ask the NHL not to schedule them a lot of home afternoon games.

I agree that a couple of Saturday afternoon games would be healthy for all teams. Sure you don't get the beer sales, but it's an opportunity to get an entirely different breed of fan (young fans) introduced to the game. All games don't have to be from a Canadian city, or even involve Canadian teams, although that would be the preference. If Rogers wanted to do it, they league would make it happen, and I think it would be great.

afternoon games suck because there is 1.
if there were more it may start a trend. make them more affordable?
allow schools to enter a lottery to take a class to them? have afternoon giveaways like mini-hockey stick day
can get creative here instead of 41 games being all the same. People here argue that a tuesday night game is like a thursday night game is like a saturday night game.

What kids can afford to go to the Flames game? I would've had to save my allowance up for over a year to go to 1 game.
Adults have problems affording the Flames these days let alone kids.

And I float the idea as a way to help the ratings, not the bottom line of the teams.

His hiring for HNIC is akin to ESPN hiring Ryan Seacrest to host Monday Night Football. A lot of hardened sports fans simply aren't going to get behind hiring a non-sports entertainment personality to host a beloved sports institution. Now that said I find him tolerable but he probably wouldn't have been my first pick that's for sure.
