I liked Russell, but given age, size, cap hit if I'm the Flames I make that trade straight up Russell for Jokipakka, never mind getting the pick and prospect to boot.

Joni Ortio. getting stronger with each game. I mean damn he's looking good. Starting to gobble up the puck more and more. Question for Erick Estrada, I know you've stated you have someone in the know who's informed you Ortio is not part of the future plans in CGY, any chance they change their minds? From what I've seen recently they really should IMO.

Boy can Nakladal rip the puck. He's a work in progress, but has been decent. Could be a solid bottom pairing guy, I hope the Flames re-sign him.

Wotherspoon has looked decent too. Hopefully he continues to establish himself as an every day NHL D-man. Can't have too many of those ever.
Russell is not a slouch. He gets a lot of flak on these boards because "blocking a lot of shots means you aren't controlling the puck", but Russell has a lot of good qualities, besides shot blocking. He will help the Stars.

Did the Flames win the trade? Absolutely. A pick and a roster player for Russell is great. But it's not like Dallas was fleeced. Russell is a low priced, top 4 defenceman. Dallas got a good player in return for Jokipakka who may or may not pan out to be a top 4 guy. Personally, I think he will.

Glad to see Ortio get a win. He's had an odd stretch of luck here recently. So good to see him get a result. As much as modern fans think a good goaltender is even strength save percentage, I have to think the real ones still feel better about wins. These last 12 games are Ortio's chance to get another shot at the NHL next year.

I don't think anyone doubts Ortio is staying in the NHL. I think the argument is whether or not he has the talent to be a starter or backup.

The thing with most goalies, is you don't really know what you have until they are 26 or older. He's only 24 and showing flashes. I think he'll be a starter one day. Hopefully with the Flames. Until that time though, I hope the Flames snag Bishop to hold the fort down for 2-3 years.

Also, it's been said many many times, and will be said many many more but:

LOL @ Forsberg for Erat

Like what in theeee hell?

Poile should have to go to jail for that one. What was XGMGM thinking on that one? Just terrible. Could you imagine if the 49-13-4 Caps had Forsberg on an ELC on their roster??? Jeeesus.

Cancel playoffs. Cup goes to the Caps by default at that point.

I like that when Ortio is in net and not Hiller, I dont think/feel like every single shot will go in.

Ortio has established a steady presence in goal for this team, and IMO it's showing in the way they have been playing.

The team has looked really good the last half dozen games or so, despite some of the losses.

Hahaha Sportsnet Eric Francis predicting a 8 year X $8M contract extension for JG. Please let that be true. Let them give Monahan the same deal

This might work out for Gaudreau. He's cashing in, but at the same time faces the prospect of flushing his career away playing on a team that is in a failed rebuild, and has no real chance at being competitive for years.

Monahan would be a disaster at that number. Slow, soft, dumb as a post. Not a fan of the player. He's the #1C in Calgary, but he'd be #4 here, behind McD, Drai, and Nuge.

I turned on the game and johnny G scored twice in 10 secs. So turned it off.

Understatement, the team looks so much more settled in their own zone no panicking and making bad plays.

That last goal just kept Ortio from breaking the mystical .900 mark, he's now sitting at .899 haha.

Maybe next game.

There are exactly 30 GMs who would rather want Monahan over Drai & Nuge, straight up.

I guess if anyone knows what a failed rebuild looks like, it'd have to be an Oiler fan. They've seen what..? Like 3 or 4 in a row now?

Also, Monahan at 20 years old was the #1 center on a team that went to the 2nd round of the playoffs, but he'd be #4 on the Oilers? I don't think so you delusional blue kool-aid chugging coiler loving sad excuse for a hockey fan.

Even Chiarelli picked Monahan over them for the World Cup under 23 team
