10 digit phone numbers for local calls in Calgary (Update)

How crappy would that be? I still can't believe they can't manage. We only have a million people in the city. In Hong Kong they have 7 million people and have over 9million phones and cell phones and you only have to dial 8 digits there for local.

I'll be ****ed if i have to change my cell phone number. hehe

I thought that outside what we can currently call from Calgary for free was going to get a new area code, and Calgary was going to keep 403 for itself. That was the reason that Northern Alberta changed; under that idea nobody would have to change area codes twice. (Not even Edmonton)

We started having to do this here in London this past summer. It SUCKS. Its been months and I still can't remember to dial 519 first. Damn cell phones!

You'll be surprised at how easily you adjust. I remember when 10-digit dialing came into effect in the Toronto area, and there was a period of a few months when we were gently reminded that it was a ten-digit call before being transferred, and then the system no longer transferred after a while.

wow. i had no idea other parts of Canada had to do this already. I guess if we have to dial 403 in front it won't be too bad because all the numbers should stay the same?

Yup - Vancouver has this. Have to dial 604 for everything.

I mean this in all honesty, but is it really that big of a deal? I guess I just agree with Goon...you adjust so quickly. When I moved out to Vancouver from Calgary, it took me maybe a week or 2 before I got used to it completely. And even with that, it was only a call here and there that I would forget to dial the area code.

I think its fairly common in big urban centers. In Montreal you have to dial all ten digits. There's also a separate area code for surrounding communities that are not on the island of Montreal.

While it might not be bad I think a new area code for Calgary and then one for the rest of southern AB. would be best.

does it really matter that much for cell phone users? Most the numbers are stored in memory anyway, and text messages have long since needed 10 numbers to send text.

Not as bad as Vancouver, not only do they have to dial 10 digits but they have two area codes within the city.

In Ottawa-Gatineau we just started this earlier this year. Although there are actually two area codes in the region. Eastern Ontario including Ottawa is 613 and Western Quebec including Gatineau is 819. Previously we could dial across the river without requiring an area code because all 7 digit numbers were unique in the region regardless of area code. However some parts of Ottawa couldn't call other parts of Ottawa without using 11 digits (i.e. 1-613-XXX-XXXX) because it was considered long distance.

Personally, I think it would be better for the 403 calling area to be kept for Calgary and surrounding area (Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, etc.) and simply assign the rest of Southern Alberta a new area code. Simply do the changeover when the new telephone directories are issued (may take some synchronization due to different publishing schedules) and the overall cost would be kept to a minimum for Telus. Also, there would be fewer costs for business and industry due to the higher concentration of them in Calgary as opposed to the rest of the southern part of the province.

Thats kind of the point of 10 digit dialing

There would be a new area code that would be used for new telephone numbers. So your friend that moves to Calgary from Regina might get the new area code, so you'd have to remember not to use 403 for them.
