I loved the pick at the time. Janko looked like one of the only players in the 1st round that had any upside as a skilled centre, albeit one that was going to be a few years away from playing.
At the time the Flames had NO centre prospects with any upside. We had no idea we'd be getting Monahan & Bennett in subsequent years.
Jankowski has developed exactly as expected. He may even be a year ahead of schedule because he skipped going to the USHL before Providence. His body has filled out & he's learned effective & complex defensive systems at the highest level of NCAA hockey. He's won the championship there & he's leading his team with strong offensive play this season.
What's not to like about this prospect? Some people just cannot admit they may have misjudged him.
I want crow to be the main course passed around at thanksgiving dinner in 2 years, served with a side of yams and cranberry sauce.
This being for some Flames fans of course, but mostly for a majority of Canucks fans that laughed themselves silly when he was called up, and subsequently kept Janko their "punchline" until now.
Monster night tonight... 2g 2a in a 6-0 win. Really stepping up this year at an age when many players are still sophomores. Starting to look like a top tier prospect with a couple more nights like this.
Sureloss can you put up that chart again comparing Janko to kreider and Hayes?
Disclaimer: not meant to prove Jankowski is worse or better than the other players on these charts. Meant to provide context as to NHL prospects that are similar situations to Jankowski.

Also worth noting that the reason for the large discrepancy between Jankowski and Hayes is a little guy named Johnny Hockey.
Makes the stat comparison between them almost meaningless, as Jankowski is the top producer for his line, while Hayes was as much a beneficiary of Gaudreau's skill than anything. He did translate his game well to the NHL but I doubt he matched his NHLE.

A lot more important than the difference in Hayes/Janko's production I think is that Jankowski is playing the nuances of the center position so well with his skating, positioning, and stickwork. Hayes was playing RW as a senior, which is pretty odd for a drafted center.

Yeah, one would have to think that if Gaudreau were on his wing, his chart line would probably look very similar to Hayes'.
