Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
Apparently tonight's #Flames starter, Joni Ortio, is also on emergency recall. If G Niklas Backstrom is healthy, Ortio will have to go.

they we both paper transactions yesterday as per the ahl's website and per sureloss in the Heat thread on the prospect board. so both are regular recalls after the deadline

Oh man. If Backstrom is good to go Orts doesn't get the start! unless the Strategically delay the arrival of Backstrom, or his gear isn't ready... Orts should be on the first plane back to Stockton.

If Backstrom hasn't arrived with the team yet, maybe Ortio is still not considered permanent.

I'm mostly confused how anyone can think Ortio or Hiller have earned starts!

that's not how it works. Both were emergency recalls yesterday because the Flames wouldn't have been able to ice a full team yesterday - they only had 1 healthy goaltender and 5 healthy defensemen on the roster, so they were able to recall Wotherspoon and Ortio for the injured Smid and Ramo. Now Jokipakka joins the Flames, so Wotherspoon had to be made a regular recall or be sent down - he was sent down. If Backstrom is good to go, they have to make the same decision in regards to Ortio.
In contrast, Hathaway wasn't an emergency recall because the Flames don't have an injured forward at the moment.

Bull. Facts are facts. It's a fact that the Flames had no intention of re-signing Jones. It's a fact that he is UFA at the end of the season. It's a fact that a sixth-round draft pick is worth more than no draft pick at all. If you think things like that are matters of opinion, then God help you, because human beings can't.

I said the Flames get an extra roster spot. You told me I said that the Flames do not get an extra roster spot. Either you were incapable of understanding what I very plainly and explicitly said, or you were lying about what I said. Take your pick. Either way, the one being a prick is you.

Ortio has been solid in his 2 of the 3 starts. He gave the Flames a chance to win games. They let him down. Safe to say he's earned some grace from the lynch mob. But nay, here we are.

Yes, obviously Bollig will play every night, we're at 12 healthy forwards.
|
I would bet that there aren't 12 healthy forwards.
At the end of a season, unless you are close to some personal record, a veteran player doesn't really care to finish off the season. A lot of players have bumps and bruises and nagging little injuries that they are playing through, but the team will get them to sit out and nurse them. What is the point of fighting through them if you are not jockeying for a better playoff position, or even trying to make the post-season?
I actually expect a number of players to be rotated through in an emergency call-up situation. Heck, I would bet a good 5 or more forwards have enough bumps and bruises to warrant a 'maintenance' game or two off.

And in the third start, he gave up six goals. You can't afford to have a goalie who can single-handedly lose you one game out of three.

I was pointing out they are not getting a roster spot BECAUSE OF THE TRADE, which you confirmed by pointing out the roster limit has been lifted. Not sure why that is so hard for you to understand, it is pretty simple.

You were WRONG. They are getting a spot on the GAME DAY ROSTER of 20 players because of the trade. That is the only roster that has a limit now, because the 23-man active roster no longer exists. That roster spot is going to Hathaway instead of Jones. DO YOU UNDERSTAND THIS VERY SIMPLE CONCEPT? Evidently not.

Correct, Flames need a goalie that can single-handedly lose every single game for the rest of the season.

him being on the team does not mean you have to play him, funny how that works. or they could sit bollig, or stajan or jooris, you know guys that have been healthy scratches plenty this year. oh look at that spots have been opened. now if you would like to stop being a condescending prick, it would be appreciated

He is 0-7 with a 3.54 GA, Refused to report for conditioning to the AHL, then went and sucked down there.
Yeah the lynch mob showed up out of no where.
Maybe we should give him a raise?

???things are getting lost in translation me thinks.
This whole thing just seems like a big troll job, I mean who really liked Jones anyway?
he's gone, the return was on par with his value and the Flames get to play someone other than jones. Win, Win.

Regarding all of the posts about Backstrom being guaranteed playing time being the reason he lifted his NTC, I also heard this speculation on the fan, however I then heard Steinberg interview Backstrom shortly after the trade was confirmed and Backstrom implicitly stated that he hadn't had any conversations regarding what his usage in Calgary was going to be.

No the Flames can't sit anybody because they are at 12 forwards.
Trading Jones opened up a spot because we had 12 forwards. That spot is now being taken up by Hathaway who was recalled.
Not sure how many times we have to repeat this before you get it.

So? These starts for Ortio are developmental. We're not making the playoffs, they know it, we know it. So why the pitchforks for a kid trying to find some footing in the NHL. He needs the games to figure it all out. Wins or losses, as long as the effort is there, I'm just keen to see how he handles it. He might lose games (good for the draft) but he needs to learn to move past the losses and rebound from them like Kipper did.
Fans may be bitter about the goaltending fiasco, but I've seen evidence that the Flames are not giving up on Ortio, they know the ups and downs from one season to the next are key in development.
