Celebrated Square Root Day
|
Arguments on CP blow me away sometimes. I open up this thread thinking "hmm, pretty minor trade I wonder why there's so much discussion today?".
Well as it turns out there's actually posters trying to argue that a trade that swapped two expiring contracts, and opened up a forward position for us to try out some AHLer's AND gave us a 6th round pick is somehow a bad trade for the Flames, in a season that's already lost.
You can certainly argue that it's a pretty "meh" trade, I don't think you'd have many arguing that, but it's still a good "meh" trade, there shouldn't be anyone saying it's a bad "meh" trade. Yet here were are. Unbelievable.

I believe Backstrom went 17-0 at home against them, which has to be some kind of record in the NHL. That guy needed to play at least one game as a Flame for that kind of service

We are at 12 healthy forwards and I think the team may be intended to stay at that amount. Then if any forward gets injured we can emergency recall their replacement and it doesn't count as any of our recalls.
Yes, obviously Bollig will play every night, we're at 12 healthy forwards.

Every team in the NHL that is competing for a playoff spot and could use David Jones disagrees with your value assessment.
Maybe you are the wrong one?
Nope, has to be everybody else.
BTW, the lottery ticket example makes no sense. It's not you spending the money on lottery tickets. Its whether you would take a lottery ticket for free. The Flames did.

Darren Haynes on twitter just mentioned that Ortio is up on an emergency recall (similar to Wotherspoon). When Backstrom is activated, they will have to move him to a 'real' call-up or send him back down to Stockton.
Also wonder if Wotherspoon will have to go down once Jakipokka is activated today.

Isn't it more like trading a used one for a new one?

that has already happened, according to the AHL transactions page. Wotherspoon is back in Stockton.

Some good tidbits in here (from Michael Russo's twitter) ...on how Jones was "hoping" to be dealt and why the deal almost didn't happen. Also, some nice comments about Backstrom professionalism and work ethic from his former teammates.

It's so we don't have to use one of our 4 call ups. Any call up to replace a guy is considered emergency if we do it this way. A lot of teams only have 6 dmen right now

Is that still in effect that teams can only make 4 recalls from the minors from now till the end of the season?
Fact maybe a little vague for me, but I remembered a few years ago where the Flames had run out of warm bodies (the 15-skater fiasco under Darryl) and also that one time when Sven was called up as an emergency replacement from juniors and he scored like 5 goals in 5 games and then people start calling him the saviour of the franchise..
BTW, is there a difference between a "call up" and a "recall?"

there are 4 non-emergency recalls, yes. The Flames have now used 1 of those (Garnet Hathaway). The Flames are at the roster minimum now though, so if anybody suffers an injury, they can recall somebody without it counting as on of the 4 recalls.

If this was an off season move I'd agree with you. But promising starts was likely the only way to get him to waive his NTC, and getting Backstrom was likely the only way to move Jones.
People here are making the mistake that this is somehow supposed to improve our goaltending. It isn't, it's about getting a sixth for Jones and needing to take on a contract to make that work. Might as well play the guy, what harm is it going to do? Even if he sucks more than Hiller, so what, not like that will be the difference between making the playoffs or not.

And Jones has not been a serviceable player this year since the very early going. He's been dead weight.
Ah, I see. Your mind is made up; no point in trying to confuse you with the facts. Good to know.

Jones will be lucky to get a contract for next year. He's pretty much done as far as I can tell.

no the flames have use 2 on Ortio and Wotherspoon with their paper transactions, then a 3rd on Hathaway (unless he was recalled before)

16 pages about a trade of a 4 million dollar 4th line UFA traded for a 6th round pick...
Are you all that starved for Flames hockey discussion?
If Alberta_Beef is too stubborn to listen to the facts then you might as well stop presenting your sound logic.

no. Both Wotherspoon and Ortio were emergency recalls, as per Haynes and others. Wotherspoon has already been sent back to Stockton today because they acquired Jokipakka and therefore there isn't an emergency any more, and Ortio will have to go down (or be converted to a regular recall) tomorrow once Backstrom joins the team. But as of today, they have only used one non-emergency recall.
EDIT: confirmed by Steinberg.
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Just got clarification from the #Flames. Wotherspoon was on emergency recall, now back to Stockton. Ortio is also on emergency right now.

It's probably difficult when dealing with someone who thinks a sixth rounder isn't worth more than the 5 points Jones would be lucky to put up during the final 20 games of a bottom-dwelling team.
One has worth.
The other is David Jones.

Yes; but ‘emergency recalls’ don't count. (See devo22's post above.)

That wasn't a problem about recalls; the team could have made as many emergency recalls as necessary. The problem, rather, was that there was no cap space to pay the recalled players. The way the CBA was written, you could put an injured player on LTIR and get cap relief, but only if the player was going to miss at least 10 regular-season games. Robyn Regehr was injured with only 9 games left in the season, so the team could not get any cap relief. If he had been injured just one game earlier, there would have been no problem and the team could have called up all the replacements it needed.
It was a thoroughly stupid situation, and the problem has been corrected in the new CBA. Article 50.10(e) provides that even if a team has no cap room, it may make emergency callups to ice a roster of 18 skaters and 2 goalies, provided that each called-up player is paid no more than $100,000 over league minimum. If that rule had existed at the time, again, the situation would never have arisen.
