Who really cares if they are saving money. There are no cap issues through the end of the year so it is only about the team saving money
Not entirely true. Well... it's true this year but there is a very real possibility that the team cap will get dinged next year due to cap overage on performance bonuses. So every dollar that's saved this year helps prevent or mitigate that.

However, I am hearing Backstrom could be in net often in #Flames final 19 games . No exact number but team wants to see 38 year old
= giving up on Ortio
The first three-headed monster really screwed Ortio IMO, this may not work out any better
The Flames should just run a contest for the fans to see who wants to play in net for the last 10 games or so. I don't mean the fans get to pick one of the 3 goalies but get to submit themselves and the Flames draw a winner for each game. It likely won't make that much of a difference on the score sheet and maybe they'll find a starter that way!

A 38 year old who has had injury problems and hasn't played a game in over a year will take it to a whole new level.
Anybody, and I mean anybody is better than that Swiss clown we have in net last few weeks. He is a disaster of all disasters, worst goalie in the World, Earth, Universe. I cannot express how bad this ultraclown is. He is joke, unwatchable...... whenever I see him during the game my ps4 controller is about to turn the NHL.TV app off. He is that bad!!!!Even my controller knows it. Ultrabad. So if Backstrom is the goalie for the remainder of the season, I am moooooore than okay with it!!!! Anybody, anyyybodyyyyy but NOT that Swiss clooowwwwnnn!!!!!!!.......uffffff I feel so much better now!

It's like he couldn't wait to get out of here. Doesn't really seem like he wanted to be here at all. Even the reaction by the guy interviewing him seemed surprised by that comment.
Glad he's gone and I'm happy the team can move on from him now.

This is a good trade. Flames get basically a free draft pick, and an opportunity to bring up another prospect for a trial run.
From Backstrom's perspective, why would you agree to waive your NTC unless there was an opportunity to play? And from the Flames' perspective I'm not sure he can be much worse than what we've seen lately.
Jones just plain sucked his entire time here. I have no idea what Scorpion is going on about his work ethic and giving it his all. What a load of bologna. Nobody mailed it in more then him , and for the tune of 4 million a year. For me even getting the very last pick in the draft for Jones would be a win.
I was excited when we got him, but his lacklustre play combined with him always being injured just made him a waste of a roster spot. He is the poster boy for inconsistent players in the NHL who cash in after a career season.

Does it open a roster spot though? 1 player out, 1 player in, right? Back to having three terrible goalies instead of two. Time will tell if that is worth a sixth round draft pick but to me this deal is just so meh why even bother. I'm not for or against this trade. Completely indifferent actually.
It opens up a roster spot up front to try out players, yes. Hudler and Jones out, no players brought in up front. Hathaway recalled.
The Flames actually wanna be at 12 healthy forwards right now it sounds like. That way if anybody gets injured they can emergency recall a forward and not have it count against the 4 recall limit.
The more draft picks the better. I think our scouting has shown over the past 7 years that they deserve any many rolls of the dice as our GM can give them.

Flames should give up on Ortio if he can't deal with competition from Hiller and Backstrom. I mean has there ever in the history of the NHL been a better opportunity for a young goalie to seize a starting job than there is right now for Ortio? Start winning some games and you will be an NHL goalie. He's 0-3 after getting 3 straight starts. He doesn't have a win in 8 appearances this year. What more should the Flames do for the guy?

Score more than 1 goal?

That's a valid excuse for one, maybe two of his starts not leading to wins. But the guy has a 3.55GAA and a sub .900SV%. He stinks just as much as Hiller does this year.

Jones was basically Kobasew... so as much as I liked the guy, he isn't a cornerstone of the franchise, and good on Treliving to get some value for him.
I think people will be pleasantly surprised by Backstrom, and I would not be shocked to see him and Ortio tandem next year- depending on how his tryout goes the rest of this season.
