He's not playing for Dallas tonight.

Do you mean Antoine Roussel?

Demers wears #4 though, so that makes sense.

They announced Russell is going to wear #2 for Dallas.

I find that interesting due to the fact that it's Derian Hatcher's old number and I thought it might be in the mix for retirement by the Stars.

Edit: I see Kris is taking Jyrki's #2 (lol)

Elimination order doesn't matter for teams that lose in the first two rounds (remember last season, the Flames still had the 15th pick even though they went to the second round).

Right now, Dallas is 3rd overall (tied with Chicago, but Chicago has the tiebreaker) and second in the Central. If the standings finished the same as they are today, and Dallas doesn't make the Conference Finals, their pick would be between 52 and 56, depending on how many regular season Division winners make it to the Conference Finals.

The bottom four spots in the Draft go to the four Conference finalists. Then, the next group of picks go to the regular season Division winners. Then, the next group goes to the remaining eliminated playoff teams.

Take, for example today's standings:

Washington, Chicago, LA, and Florida are the four Division leaders. Dallas is the highest-ranked non-leader, tied in points with Chicago and ahead of LA and Florida in points.

Let's take a case where none of the Division leaders qualify for the Conference Finals (and Dallas doesn't either)...
ECF: Tampa vs NY Rangers
WCF: Anaheim vs St Louis

SCF: Blues defeat Rangers

In that scenario:

St Louis would get the 30th pick; the Rangers would get 29th; Tampa would be 28th; Anaheim would be 27th.

The Division leaders would then get the next four slots (even though Dallas has more points than some of them): Washington at 26th; Chicago at 25th; LA at 24th; and Florida at 23rd.

Dallas, as the highest-ranked non-Division winner, would then pick 22nd. The Flames would get their second-rounder and pick 52nd.

Their pick will move down one for every Division leader that makes the Conference Finals, and moves into the bottom four if they make the Conference Finals themselves.

This may seem like an unlikely scenario, but the exact thing happened two seasons ago. St Louis finished 4th overall, one point behind Colorado for the Division lead, but the Blues ended up getting the 22nd pick because none of the Division leaders went to the Conference Finals.

Burke on Russell

Quote:
“We love Kris Russell. He’s a classic Flame, a classic Alberta kid; his dad was a bullfighter, for god’s sake. We have made a significant offer to keep him, but his agent and Rusty feel that you don’t get many chances to test the market. He thinks term wise and money wise he can do better, and we understand that. But that means it’s probably time to part ways. We owed Rusty a good-faith effort to sign him, but now moving forward, to fit him in with our defense and the players whose contracts are up would have to make financial sense. I don’t think we’ll be able to reach an agreement like that, so he’s likely on the move.”

Here's a preview of what Jyrki Jokipakka can do

Last one was a disallowed goal, but it was still a real good play.

The highlights look great.

Why would they want Russell instead?

Do Wotherspoon or Nadakal have highlight packages?

Honestly, this trade makes no sense to me from the Stars perspective.

It seems like Jokipakka is a younger and almost as good defenceman....and the Stars add a 2nd that might be a 1st.

Not complaining. So nice to finally be on the receiving end of these baffling trades. This trade, the Hamilton trade, the Shinkaruk trade, etc... You have to give it to management. Asset management has been out of this world. So much better than the Sutter era, when we leaked assets on every deal.

Me too. Try saying 10 times super fast:

Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka.

This season may be a dissapointment but Jyrki's name alone will keep me occupied until next season.

Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka. Jyrki Jokipakka.

Oh how quickly we forget the God status that Daryl Sutter earned before he went crazy. On paper he built a pretty stacked team and we ate it up.

... Then J-Bo bombed and he literally lost his mind.

Who wouldnt? That makes total sense and I'm surprised its even a discussion.

Russell: 28 years old, durable, shotblocking top 4 dman good for 15-30 points.

Hamhuis: 33 years old, soft, top 4 dman good for 20-30 points.

Because Russell has proven already that he can handle real middle pair minutes. That's huge for a bottom pair guy because now when you have injuries to an Oduya or Demers the guy who's stepping up isn't going to Justin Schultz or Deryk Engelland on you. Russell might not be a true middle pair defenseman but he's a Dman who can step into a middle pair role and get enough fresh air to breathe.

We don't know if that's true of Jokipakka immediately, and he's played minutes only slightly more difficult than Tyler Wotherspoon (Further up / left is more difficult, further down/right is more sheltered. All zone start and possession coloring are relative to team).

You can see that Jokipakka was basically playing the kind of minutes we had Wideman playing. 3rd pairing.
