If we do finish 3rd last we'd have a 13.8% chance to draft 6th. But almost 50% chance of drafting top 4.

Where does one get a hat like the one Hamilton is wearing right now? I like that.

What I find amazing is that, with goalies, fans don't seem to consider development. A young forward joins the team, and people forgive mistakes. With a goalie - if he isn't Vesina from day 1, he's a bum.

Ortio was bad tonight but was passable in his other starts being as you would expect/hope from an NHL backup but I'm going to have to see more before I consider him having a good chance to be back next season.

I won't cheer the tank, but Ottawa is the team that came out short in this one. Their not making the playoffs, and this only pushes hem into Flames 5 years ago land. Not bad and not good. On the plus Flames played well. I didn't sense anyone packed it in al la Oilers in November. This is just not the year.
I think next year we'll see progress. My hope is they get the best player in the draft who can impact next year. Top 3 should be a must. If they can get an elite talent on the first line, and a decent goaltender they'll be right there. All due respect to Hudler, he was a great passer but a young guy with hunger and grit would go a long way to making this team elite quickly.

Ortio is young and has time to grow his game. Hiller on the other hand is near the end of his career where his game has been on a downward spiral. Maybe be you can't see that - I don't know.

Ortio has given us glimpses of what he could be at the NHL level. It's not tainted to think that he could develop some consistancy in his game where he can earn a spot at the NHL level.

Ortio was stellar for the first two periods.
The third he wasn't great, but he also got no help and a couple brutal bounces.

So by my count that's 8 good periods and 1 bad one since getting this chance.

Get him back in the net next game and let's see what we've got here. What's the other option? Play Hiller and see what we have in him? I don't ****ing think so TYVM.

From how perfectly bad everything has gone this season, I am actually beginning to believe our destiny is Matthews or Laine.
It's win-win though because we're still seeing our core playing very well all the while.

Maybe he was trying to instinctively defend himself, but it doesn't make up for the fact he was way out of position. Sorry, he didn't have a good night tonight. He should start the next game, because hey, the alternative is still worse.
The way this team defends concerns me. Been an issue all season, with all the players. Gio and Brodie have often been chasing shadows in their own zone and giving up awful goals, the rest of the defence hasn't been much better bar the recent 2 call ups. Forwards haven't helped in this regard either. Now, we either have a group of players that are just not good enough to defend effectively over the course of an NHL season, which is a concern. Or, we have a group of coaches that aren't coaching this group in how to defend effectively. Either way, it's a massive massive concern and if Hartley can't get more out of this group next season, his position(and that of his coaches) has got to be under scrutiny.

We were outworked and outfought by a faster hungrier team tonight. No excuse for that pathetic 3rd period, none whatsoever.

As for all this "2 Matthews points", please GTFO! Thats classic Oiler mentality and its downright embarrassing, no matter which way you slice it. Getting him or Laine won't matter if we believe that efforts like what we saw tonight are in any way acceptable, at any stage of a season. Get em in tomorrow for a bag skate, gutless performance.
 |
I'm with you all the way except for the GTFO statement. This game means nothing in the big picture and come June nobody is going to look back at these late season losses and wish they were wins. I want them to be worse this season to be much better in future seasons.

Cassie in her post game interview had Dougie Hamilton's face turning as red as his Flames cap when she was asking some of her questions. He doesn't have any airs at all, if anything he is a modest guy that blushes easily!

I have my doubts that the Flames are ready to give up on him. For me it might come down to Ortio swallowing his pride and signing a 2 way deal.

Nope wrong. Never ever cheer for the flames to lose. Ever.

They might, if losing becomes an acceptable attitude in the room and among the fans. Oilers were OK with losing for a couple years for higher picks, and now they just can't stop for the life of them. Flames have drafted 4th and 6th overall already very recently.... How many more years is it "ok" to lose out like this for a higher pick?

It wasn't very hard to post that at all, pretty straight forward. People want Ortio to be the answer so bad they are even willing to pretend that this last stretch of games is Ortio's first shot. The guy has been a below average goalie all year......in the AHL. Tonight isn't just one trip up in a short season, it's a consistent occurance at this level and the level below. I'm not writing Ortio off at all, but he's simply not ready and not at all the uprgrade on Hiller people want to pretend he is right now. He needs a lot more baking not in the NHL. And people want to cut him all sorts of slack and blame our goaltending woes on others when he's just as responsible. All reports suggest the Flames wanted to run with Ortio / Ramo to start the year. He did nothing to help this team in net thus year, from not earning a spot in camp, to sucking in the AHL. I'm willing to be patient with him, but the fan base has been cruel to both Hiller and Ramo this year (and rightfully so) after their play was a hyge contributed to playoff hockey last year, but in the same breath are simply parading out the excuse book for Ortio, when he's arguably been the worst of the three. It's redicilous.
