Even winning that involves a ton of luck, especially injury luck.

No kidding.
Russell is on the right side of 30, but really hasnt been anything worth talking about until the last couple of years.
To go from being traded for Nikita Nikitin who may not be the worst defenceman in the NHL, but is certainly in that conversation, to being waived by the Blues and picked up by the Flames.
You'd think 'fit' would be foremost on Russell's mind. Especially if hes friends with Glencross.

My Orange Julius guy told me that Ruddel and Flames are actually $1.5 million apart in total contract value. He also told me that Russell is an uppity loner and no one in he dressing room likes him.

I am not surprised we are right and NHL scouts/executives are wrong - our IQ is at least 2 SD's higher.

He cannot make more than Brodie. End of story. Under 4 is ok, but still not worth it IMO.

If this is true than this is great news that he will surely be dealt. I would not pay him more than $4M for 3 years.

Wait, an NHL executive who's actually paying attention? Hire him immediately.

What's amazing isn't that you posted a: "executives that disagree with me - dumb, executive that agrees with me - smart" post.
What's amazing is that 2 people thanked it.

That, and Edmonton is no good.
/As for Kris Russell, I might go as high as 3.5 million on a 3 year deal, but that means the Flames need to shed one of Wideman, Smid, or Engelland. Already have too much money tied up in the defense corps.

Without Smid or Wideman there is little doubt in my mind he would be signed to a new contract already.

Continued Negotiations with Russell will help drive up the asking price for what the Flames can get for a return when they trade Russell.
Depends in the depth on D where he goes if he is a 2nd or 3rd pairing.
On the Flames i like him as a 3rd pairing.
But if they could move Wideman instead i would favor that decision even more.

Is anyone getting a little concerned about the lack of trades thus far considering the amount of players that the Flames have to sell.

Not really. I'd be a little more concerned if there were more trades overall and the Flames were sitting on their hands but aside from the Shinkaruk trade and the Ladd trade, nothing of real substance has transpired yet. And it's even debatable from an outside perspective if the Van/Cgy trade is really anything of importance.
The other players in the buyers market have been silent so far as well so I chalk this up to CHI just getting their eggs in a basket now to avoid the real insanity coming up throughout the weekend.

Worth noting that last season the deadline was March 2nd. Glencross went on March 1st and Baertschi went on March 2nd.
So both Hudler and Russell could easily not go until Sunday/Monday.

Regardless of the contract value, there's very few players any team should sign for more than 3 years.

Fair point to start off your post, but then you pull a grade AAA d_ck move, for no reason.
Smarten up.

Sorry but does Brad need to be reminded that this is team has the 29th ranked GAA in the NHL and worst PK? Goaltending has been terrible but as with the Oilers the problem runs deeper than goaltending as this defence is most consistent at leaving their men wide open in front of the net over anything else.
I believe in pay for performance and IMO outside of Brody no defenseman on this team deserves a raise for this season's performance so to that I say good bye to Kris Russell and wish him the best of luck over the rest of his career. If Treliving wants to ensure that the Flames are always going to have to score themselves out of holes and depend on late game heroics then go for it and reward Russell. Otherwise time to move on and seek out better players either from within or trade.

When I think of Russell I think think of last year's playoff series against the Ducks. I remember watching the Ducks cycle and thinking Russell looks like child trying to play with men. I don't care how good he played for us when Gio went down last year the bottom line is our defense needs to get bigger and meaner. Russell has to go and if Treliving doesn't see this I think Burke does. Hope nothing but the best for Russell however I hope it's somewhere else.

They have lots of players to sell but a number of them have no value.
Hudler and Russell are the players that get you something.
At this point Jones, Hiller, Ramo are likely not going to get you anything. Even with Jones, if I'm a contending team I ask if he is better than what I have on my roster or on the farm - and he probably isn't.
So I'm not sure beyond Hudler and Russell - what you are expecting.
Would be great to see BT move out one of the guys with term left, but I also think that's a pipe dream.
