Jiri Sekac and Jared Cowen on waivers

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNICSekac (CHI) on waivers today

 Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Cowen (TOR) also there. Malone cleared.

Kind of surprised Cowen made it to waivers. Just goes to show, low hockey iq defenceman don't last long in the league.

I think I remember hearing that we were one of the teams in on Sekac when he came to the NHL. He hasn't exactly panned out, but he is only 23. Maybe he still has room to improve.

Some team with money to burn has to pick up Cowen. If you buy him out, you somehow get $750k in cap space. I'm sure the leafs would've gone for it if they had any need of the cap space.

Haven't been impressed with Sekac when he was with the Ducks but I have to admit I haven't watched him a ton. Gotta be a bit worrying that MTL, ANA and CHI all gave up on him so quick.

Oddly enough I could see Chicago do that possibly as they're going to get with Panarin's unexpected bonuses next year and every penny helps.

I know Cowen isn't great, but that smells so tanky to me. He can't make that leafs lineup?

Smells tanky because it is tanky. It's probably to open up roster spots for some of their young prospects

Cowen is pretty bad but he's definitely good enough to play on one of the worst defenses in the league
They were one of the worst defenses before they even traded Phaneuf, Polak and Spaling

I was under the impression that Toronto did not want their top prospects with the team, in fear of having them in a bad environment.

Maybe they are clearing contracts so they have room to take on more bad contracts via trade.

I don't know, is Cowen that bad? I mean he was drafted pretty high.
Dump Wideman or Russell and pick him up?

No. High draft position means nothing if you don't show results in this league.

I think you're right. They could be thinking he'll clear waivers; he may not be a good dman at the NHL level but the Marlies are going for a Calder Cup.

No, I get that. Just wondering if a change of scenery or playing with the likes of Brodie, Hamilton, Gio would help him...

I'd rather see Cowen than Smid for similar money. Or if you can arrange a trade with the Leafs and they retain a bit of salary, I think it'd be worth it.
