If you think Horvat will always be a 3rd liner then you probably aren't watching him closely enough. He's a damn good young player. Anyways that discussion is silly, they aren't trading Horvat.
< 0.5 PPG and a god awful +/- indicative of not a great 2-way game sounds like third line territory on a good team to me. Right now he's not going to be on a winning team's shutdown line.
He'll progress but it's not looking great. I've seen some of him this year. The only time I was impressed with him was in the last couple months of his rookie season.
The Canuck fans who hate this trade obviously think Granlund is just living off his brother and isn't a good hockey player.
Granlund is a solid player and will slide right into their lineup and not look out of place.
Personally I'm not a fan on the trade as a Flames fan but not too upset as it is a pretty minor deal and Granlund as a center would have been very hard going forward when we have Monahan, Backlund, and Bennett.
Yup. At this point Granlund has proven way more, only a year older. He's not breaking records out there but he's a solid player.

Too much reliance on stats there. He's great young player who isn't anywhere near fully developed yet. He's not going to plateau as a 3rd liner. He's not Sean Monahan but to try and paint him as a future 3rd line defensive liability? That's just uninformed hogwash. He's a great young player, I'd love to have him on the team and he'll be a key top two liner for the Canucks for years. Let's not let hatred of our rivals lead us to make absurd statements.
Bennett will probably plateau as a 3rd liner right? His stats aren't amazing this year right? WRONG. Gotta use context when evaluating stats and you don't seem to be taking into account Horvat's young age and inexperience.

anyone saying they wouldnt trade jankowski for horvat needs to get their heads out of their ####ing asses and stop being such homers
IMO Jankowski has a higher ceiling. Has all the tools.
Anyone saying they would make the trade without thinking twice fail to grasp the concept of a project player, are impatient, and probably already have issues with blowing their load too early for a 6.

Or you are dramatically underrating Horvat. Which seems to be the case.

Which is why I don't understand the "lol did Benning think he was trading for the other Granlund" posts.
Shinkaruk isn't better than Granlund now and has a lot of maturing to do if he wants to overpass him in the future. Canucks got a solid 2 way player for someone who might never make the NHL.

Project player? Sorry, but I don't think you'll find anyone who isn't Jankowski's mom or a few flames fans that don't make that trade and laugh.
It's great to have high hopes for a player, and find to own it saying you think he's got more to show. But don't try to make it seem like a common or more likely opinion. You'd be in an extreme minority anywhere but here on that one

Except Bennett already has better stats and PPG.
It's not because of rivalry hatred. I simply don't like him that much.
Granlund: 1st season after draft 25g, 21a = 46 pts in 52 games
Shinkaruk 1st season after draft 16g, 15a = 31 pts in 74 games
Granlund 2nd season after draft 18 pts in 48 NHL games and 17 pts 21 AHL games.
Shinkaruk 2nd season after draft 0 pts in 1 NHL game and 39 pts in 45 AHL games.
Granlund 3rd season after draft 7 pts in 31 NHL games and 9 pts in 12 AHL games.
Two years into development Granlund was further ahead and put up better numbers.
They are roughly the same size.
Even though Granlund is a centre, he's best suited for LW, which is what Shinkaruk plays.
Shinkaruk has had a history of attitude problems, Granlund has never.
I think this trade is much smaller scale than people think. It was an opportunity to trade a player buried on the roster for one who has an extra 2 years before RFA to see if he pans out.

You are missing the fact that Shinkaruk underwent significant surgery, which affected his game total and point total. He's simply a better prospect, plays a more desirable position, and, yes, has a better contract.
Granlund wasn't earning his keep here. He is the fifth best centre on the Flames roster.
The point you should have taken from my post was that the points Bennett produces at age 19 are smaller than what he will produce in his prime. Just like the points that Horvat produces at age 20 are smaller than what he will produce in his prime. The whole idea of looking at a 20 year olds stats in the NHL and trying to determine his upside exclusively from that is stupid. Horvat has not peaked and neither has Bennett. You tried to use a 20 year olds stats to prove that he will be a 3rd liner when he's fully developed. That is stupid. I mean you can't really sugarcoat it.
