I still maintain that Iggy is 2nd only to Dionne on that dubious list.

Ovechkin will quickly become #1 on that list if he doesn't win. Holy hell it looks like they will win this year though.

Acquiring points in the 80's was easier than any other decade.

Iginla is better than those players listed...nothing Homer about it.
Uhh, did you never use Roenick on NHL 94?

What's your point? He still got more than anyone in that decade not named Gretzky...if he said Stastny is 7th all time in PPG then your point would be more valid. Of course if you adjust the comparison period by a few years either way he probably drops, but it's still a comparison between players in the same era.

This comes back to the good ole' peak vs. longevity argument. Iginla would find himself on both lists, as would Ovechkin, Dionne, Hawerchuk and Oates. Probably a few others too. I think homer glasses probably affect my perception of Iginla's effectiveness in the later years vs. others.

Cam Neely should be added to the peak list.

Turgeon and Lafontaine's only huge seasons came in 92-93, when half the league set career highs. Great players, but adjust that season and they don't standout as much.

The other question may be who you'd rather have on your team. I think Iginla is the better player with the better career, but I'd take pretty much any of the centres listed ahead of him to build a team around. At the end of the day they're all just a bunch of losers though.

It's easy to forget how dominant iginla was in his prime... Mainly because even when he hasn't been dominant the last few years, he's still been a great player. But in his prime... he was unstoppable. I remember the 2004 series against the red wings... The story the whole time was how Detroit had no answer for how to contain iggy. And they had Lidstrom in his prime back then.

I would argue he was the best player in the game from 2002-2006.

There are seven Art Ross winners without a Stanley Cup. Marcel Dionne is the only one who is currently retired.

The other six are the Sedins, Thornton, Ovechkin, Iginla, and Benn. Of the seven, Iginla has the most games played.

In his long illustrious career, Dionne never made it past the second round of the playoffs (and he only got there once). Benn has only been in the playoffs once, but he's still young.

Iginla and the Sedins have been to game seven of the Final. Thornton has gone to the Conference Final. Ovechkin has gone to the second round a few times, but never beyond. The Caps will definitely be the favourites this year, though.

Thornton, the Sedins, Iginla, and Ovechkin have all been on President's Trophy winning teams. Thornton, the Sedins, Iginla, and Benn all have Olympic gold medals (Iggy has two).

Iginla has won every team award you can in the game of hockey (that he was capable of winning) except the Stanley Cup.

And for one of those years, he wasn't allowed to play. If he hadn't been deprived of the lockout season, we'd probably be looking at an assured 700 goal career. I think that if the 04-05 season had been played, there might have been 1 or 2 more trophies for him.

As stated in this thread numerous times, his totals would be a lot higher if not for the 2 lockouts. It's a damn shame he was robbed of the Hart trophy in 01-02 when Jose Theodore took it. Don't forget he was basically robbed of a 100 point season in 06-07 I think when he missed nearly 15 games due to a knee injury and still ended up with like 94 points.

As some have stated, I do hope he plays till at least 43 (he has always been one of the best conditioned players in the league), rack up his goals and points and who knows perhaps even win that elusive cup. Still hope he retires as a Calgary Flame, playing one last season here, or even half a season from say a deadline trade. I am not a fan of "1 day contracts". This guy deserves to put on the flaming C once again and have the fans here in Calgary cheer him on for a season.

Totally agree with this. Guy brings it every year and is still a solid top six scoring winger. Would love to have him back on the roster. He would be money taking passes from gaudreau. And the cheap shots on Johnny would be answered by beast mode iginla himself.

That ship has sailed. But considering no one he was traded for has made an impact yet it might be fair to say the Flames would be better if they had kept him. (Ignoring leadership/deference considerations)

Iginla needed to go to refresh the culture, something that could have never happened if he stayed. It was time for new leadership and vibe in Calgary, and you can't get that with someone as respected as Iggy hanging around, the young guys and Gio would have never felt like they could take over the leadership culture.

Doesn't change the fact that we still didn't get anything in the trade, and doesn't mean he couldn't fit in at some point down the road. But both sides really needed a fresh start in the Iggy / Flames relationship.

I agree - that's what I meant about leadership/deference.....not suggesting he was a bad leader but the team needed to change. But as a veteran RW we sure could use him
