Boggles the mind.

This is not even close to what happened. If you read some of the details of the case the whole argument started when he disapproved of these girls plan to harass the game maker. The three girls then colluded and lied to police to falsely accuse a man of sexually harassing all of them as a pedophile, sending accusatory letters to his employer (getting him fired), getting him banned from using a computer for 3 years as a graphics designer and costing him his entire retirement in legal fees.
The prosecution and the girls also omitted tweets that showed that the girls were actually the ones harassing the guy and he was merely over aggressively defending himself. This is a case that was brought to court on the public dime based on a huge number of false accusations that cost a person his job, livelihood, reputation and savings. Its pretty damning that the case even got this far within the legal system. On top of that the aggressors can walk away scott free with no repercussions and zero cost to themselves. I hope he sues them all for libel and gets their wages garnished for a long time.
From the court summary:
Quote:
Counsel further submits that at many points during cross-examination, Ms. Guthrie asked rhetorical questions and displayed disdain for any suggestion that Mr. Elliott had ever uttered/tweeted anything valid on any subject. Ms. Guthrie’s rhetorical questions “And how is it relevant whether it was a valid point? Who cares?” confirms that – as far as Ms. Guthrie was concerned – it did not matter to her whether or not Mr. Elliott’s contributions on Twitter were valid political/philosophical comments. No matter what the content of Mr. Elliott’s tweets, Ms. Guthrie allegedly believed that his comments betrayed Mr. Elliott’s obsession with her. Counsel submit that if Ms. Guthrie truly believed that Mr. Elliott was obsessed with her, personally, such a belief -on the evidence before the Court – cannot be considered reasonable. For whatever reason, Ms. Guthrie was completely unable to view Mr. Elliott’s tweets through the lens of valid, political commentary/opposition. Any feelings of fear that Ms. Guthrie allegedly felt were the result of Ms. Guthrie’s irrational conclusion that Mr. Elliott was obsessed with her.

Well okay, that makes it even worse. I just read the judgment and just on the face of that it was insane; I don't know anything about the context.
I don't know how he can sue them for libel. I guess he could try, but the decision here said the judge thought they were credible. So nothing here helps him.

Libel from false accusations of pedophilia to family, friends and employer + financial damages, legal fees, damage to reputation and four years of pain and suffering and he could probably throw in a side of PTSD. Sadly he'll probably never collect much of that.
The fact that the Crown in this case seemed overly biased and started crying when the case wasn't going her way, that the original detective investigating this case considered none of Elliot's tweets threatening AND the guy's worst tweet was calling the girl a "Fat A##" shows how crazy this whole case as been.
Quote:
Elliott’s defence argued that it was an injustice to subject his client to the extra costs related to defending against the Crown’s mistake. He explained to the court that Elliott has already paid him $50,000, is in debt for another $30,000. and that “it’s unlikely he’ll ever be able to repay”. At one point the defence indicated it might be an Abuse of Process to put Elliott into this position.
Ignoring claims of injustice, the Crown argued against the defence’s request. At one point the judge kindly ask her if she was sure about her decision, but she stood unwavering.
Then suddenly, after almost three hours into the day’s hearing, the Crown started crying. She grabbed a tissue from across the table, dabbed her eyes and apologized to the judge saying she was upset over a personal issue.
The judge shut-down the hearing to reconvene on October 6th- the date originally scheduled for the final ruling on Elliott’s innocence or guilt.
Detective Banglid testified in court that Eliott’s tweets were never threatening. One of his alleged victims bragged in court about her vigilante Twitter attacks against people she deems to be “misogynists”. Evidence was introduced into the court that two of the alleged victims spread misinformation that Elliott was a “pedophile”. A large number of Elliott’s tweets used in evidence against him were purely political- what many observers see as protected speech. Elliott’s most offensive tweet was to accuse his alleged victims of having “fat asses”.
The judge also noted a lack of “reasonableness” in Guthrie’s assertion she could expect to use Twitter to make negative comments about Elliott and not be exposed to his response or self defence.

The three women who accused Elliott fit this description perfectly. Christie Blatchford of Canada’s National Post describes how his accusers “convened a meeting of friends to discuss how Elliott should be publicly shamed; they bombarded their followers with furious tweets and retweets about him (including a grotesque suggestion from someone pretending she was a 13-year-old that he was a pedophile); they could and did dish it out.”
Q. But by the time you met Detective Bangild, you already testified to this, you were aware that she was either 18 or 19, agree?
A. Yes.
Q. Right. Good. So not really trying to help out Mr. Elliott when you’re not mentioning the fact it’s actually an adult, right?
A. My position wasn’t really that I wanted ... I was not trying to help Mr. Elliott.
Q. Right.
A. He was stalking me. So no, I wasn’t trying to help me. I wasn’t trying to harm him unduly, but I was not trying to help him and I was not trying to ... yeah.
Q. Right. In your view handing tweets alleging Mr. Elliott’s a pedophile without correcting the officers receiving them, is not trying to harm Mr. Elliott, right?
A. Wasn’t trying to harm him, no.

How there isn't a criminal case against the girls for making false statements and criminal harassment coming out of this is mind boggling. It is a huge failing of our justice system that the case made it court with no fact checking of accusations.

Every day the human race finds new ways to shock me with our stupidity:
Quote:
Two teens are dead after drinking a combination of gasoline mixed with Mountain Dew, and officials suspect the dangerous concoction is to blame. Substituting alcohol for the more toxic and potent racing fuel has led to the third and fourth deaths reported in Tennessee, bringing the matter to the attention of poison centers.
The racing fuel Stephenson and Byram consumed shortly before their death is a combination of gasoline and methanol. Methanol is the simplest form of alcohol and is closely related to ethanol, which is the type of alcohol normally found present in beer, wine, and spirits. However, methanol poses significantly higher levels of toxicity, and is probably the high the teens were after. According to the National Institutes of Health, as little as two tablespoons can be deadly to a child, while two to eight ounces are deadly to the average adult.

And the media coverage of this has been either non-existent, or predictably biased. The Globe and Mail ran a column the other day from a self-professed feminist who was deeply disappointed and saddened that the defendant isn't going to face criminal penalties.

The Crown Prosecutor really needs to be fired for taking this case to court and being stupid enough to not listen to the whole story.
The Girls need to be sued for legal fees, charged criminally and kicked in the a%% a thousand times .

I'm reading up on Stephanie Guthrie.
She's a bully hiding behind a feminist label. She's a loudmouth narcissist who tries to destroy lives. She's the worst example of a social media advocate, she's callous and mean spirited.
There was a quote attributed to her from a reporter friend of her's that vote a very slanted argument about how awesome she is.
Quote:
“I’m a total Lisa Simpson. I always have been, I always will be. I have an annoying voice. I am an agitator. I will point out what’s wrong with what you’re doing,” she says.
|
Well, we're waiting with baited breath for you to admit whats wrong with you? I expect we'll be waiting for a long time.
The only way that this can end with any kind of closure for the actual victim here is an apology and a check for the costs of his defense.
Or
Her being put into the back of a police car that takes her straight to booking.
She shouldn't be allowed to get away with what she did. If the justice system is serious about things like Cyber bullying then she has to be held up as an example of what a cyber bully is, as do her friends, especially the one that pretended to be a sexual assault victim, she should got to prison.

Could be easily attributed to a few CP'ers.

I am surprised the Kit Kat - "my bar didn't have wafers, I want a lifetime supply" or drug price gouger Martin Shkreli hasn't shown up here yet.

I made the mistake of googling that, rather rage inducing. Emotional and monetary suffering, gimme a break. Pun intended.

Eh, I wouldn't have been shocked by Turkey or somewhere in Eastern Europe or even Africa, either. I've heard some crazy stories about local football in those places as well. Guys climbing the chain link fence that encloses the visitors' fan area with knives in their teeth, for example. Sports!

Dolphin Dies Being Passed Around For Selfies
Beachgoers gather around a small dolphin after it is scooped out of the sea off the coast of Argentina.
|
Quote:
A young dolphin has died after beachgoers took it from the sea to pose for photographs with it.
Huge crowds gathered around the small animal on the beach resort at Santa Teresita in Argentina after one man picked it up.
But it appears it quickly overheated and died while out of the water.
It was still being passed around by the beachgoers after its death and was later left discarded in the sand.
"The Franciscana, like other species, cannot remain for much time outside of the water, it has thick fatty skin which gives it heat and means that taking it out of the water rapidly causes it to dehydrate and die," it said in a statement.
