Admittedly Nakladal looked very shaky at the start of the game, too much indecision. Can't be hesitant at this level.

There's only one interesting Hartley quote - but no details or big reaction at all.

I liked when he called Jermaine Franklin "Columbo".

To be fair it was his first NHL game, he probably was pretty nervous. I thought when it was 4-1 he'd get some more time, but I guess not. Hopefully we'll see him a bit more in the next couple weeks.

He whiffed on one chance to keep it in the offensive zone. The sort of thing at least two Flames d-men are guilty of doing at least a few times a night. Hartley kept him on a comically short leash.
Meanwhile, Englland and Smid got shredded tonight. Hartley should have at least tried to spread the time around when they were ahead. He didn't. And then they got behind.

Was at the game tonight and holy moly were there a lot of Leafs fans. Glad the Flames got the win but man were they awful. Notable exceptions: Hamilton, Granlund and Frolik.

When you have no confidence in a player and you still think you have a chance at the playoffs, it's necessary to do what you think is best. In this case, Hartley bench Nakladal. I probably would have played him a bit after they went up 3-1 but it is what it is. He may get another shot, he may not.
It's no coincidence that since he left stockton they have lost every game.

Haha Hartley refuses to divulge what team rule they broke after being peppered with questions. Even compliments the media at the end telling them they are persistent.

The creator says the NHL is taking a long time after games to put highlights up unfortunately. Only 1/12 of tonight's games have highlights up right now.

Good to see Markus granlund sticking it to the doubters tonight when he got the opportunity. Dougie showing some offensive upside tonight.
I like gutsy wins where your team depth comes through for you. Gaudreaus game was tailing off lately and Mony/Bouma by all accounts were undermining the coach in some way or another with their behavior. I want to see this team fight to the bitter end and this is the first time this season I must applaud his actions. This is a good way to spark your top players who are young and prone to becoming complacent 50+ games in. I really hope this fuels them. Bouma needs to come back a different player.
For what it's worth, we have 4 games in hand on the wildcard Avalanche. Maybe a spot in the Pacific top 3 is looking grim. but suddenly the wildcard race could get interesting with success on this road trip.
Please go back to Ramo.

Hartley is the boss and he made his call. I agree that Engo and Smid have played decent as of late, but their game was deteriorating quickly as this game progressed. If I were coach, I would have thrown in a few more shifts at least for Nakladal to see how he handled it. I am certain he would not have been worse. Of course the bonus is that he could have possibly been better.
I REALLY hope this isn't the end of Nakladal's career in Calgary. At least until such time as he's proven he can or can't play in the big league.

I imagine this was very disappointing to Hartley, who has been a big Bouma supporter.

That's the ultimate catch-22 with wins like the last two. It's the right thing, but it gives Hartley too much belief in "his plan" and we might end up not playing Nakladal or Grant or prospects at all in the stretch run OR getting a high draft pick. "Top 4 Defenseman Kris Russell", "Left Winger Sam Bennett, "Powerplay Superstar Dennis Wideman", "D-Zone Panic Attack Markus Granlund", "D-Zone Heart Attack Deryk Engelland". This is gonna be a tough season to swallow down the road, barring some miraculous undefeated streak.

"the way the game went"
You mean the game where they had a 4-1 lead at one point? He wasn't comfortable playing Nakladal then?
And it's not like Engelland or Smid were great tonight anyways.

This looked more than anything to me like one of those "we have a good lead, now we can sit back" games. I thought they looked good early and that TO was terrible. Then they took the door off the gas, got trapped, and inevitably a puck or two goes in.
