Mostly because the only other words in the English language that have "G-I-F" is gift (and derivatives) or fungiform, both pronounced with a hard G. So it just makes sense, at least to me the GIF should follow.
Really in the end.. tomato, tomato, potato, potato, lets call the whole thing off.
