Flames Friedman: "Calgary controls the goalie market"

From his 30 thoughts

18. Remember Anaheim is overflowing on the blue-line, looking for young forwards. Dallas would like to add a defenceman, but there’s a possibility Jim Nill plays it more conservatively than we expect. He’s a big picture thinker, and may look at the Stars as going through the process, as opposed to being at the apex of it. Very intrigued to see what he’ll do. Minnesota would love to add scoring — the sooner, the better. Calgary controls the goalie market. That could change depending on late-season or playoff results, but the if the Flames wish to strike now for next season, they’d have more options than others before the market heats up. No idea what Vancouver’s defence looks like after the deadline, particularly if they are still in it.

Sounds like he is saying the Flames could go out there and grab a goalie right now if they want.

Error, error. He said calgary "controls" the goalie market, not "owns".

To me it sounds like the Flames are the only team really looking for a goalie. It's too bad the 2 they have are worthless on the trade market right now. I just can't see any teams wanting to take one of them as a backup but it would be great if we could get something for either of them.

I don't really understand his line. They mean we could get someone for next year before anyone else, or we are the prime sellers? I guess you're right, it must mean the former.

It means at this moment, the Flames are the only buyer in town and there's a bunch of sellers they can pick from.

Is he saying that the teams with extra goalies are looking for Defence?

I could see Anderssen, Howard, Leightonen, Pavelec, Ward, Bernier, Neuvirth and maybe Smith or Enroth being traded.

Considering we have the worst goalie situation amongst the entire league, I'd certainly "hope" that we are controlling the market.

But where's the moves to go along with such a statement. We already lost out on this season because we missed out this summer, time to show some results on this front.

I'd say we need to add at least 2 goalies maybe 3 or 4 here let's get going.

Address the goalie situation in the off season, there is no point in doing it now.

Sell off Hudler, Russell - use assets gained to flip for a goalie. Sounds good to me.

I've always thought neuvirth would be a good guy to take a gamble on. Howard and bernier would be good options as well if not for those contracts.

If Detroit wants to eat some of Howards salary, how comfortable would people be with him at the helm? He has pretty good career stats, is only 31, and is having an off-year, which means he could come as at a minimum especially considering Detroit is going with Mrazek.

Only other one I can think of that would be a decent pickup is Antti Raanta on an expiring contract.

I'd be happy with Raanta/Howard for a few seasons. Raanta still has the potential to be a #1 while Howard hopefully will steady the ship. Gillies stews. I don't think Ortio has what it takes.

Seems obvious to me that we'll be going into next season with 2 new NHL goalies.

Because a media insider with sources is reporting that Calgary controls the goalie market. It can't be proven unless a trade is actually made or we hear the phonecalls of 30 GMs. So it is a rumor.

These goalie options seem pretty weak. I don't want us wasting assets for 32 next month Jimmy Howard.

Rumor vs. conjecture I suppose.

Wings might just want to get rid of him, Mrazek looks like the real deal. Might not have to give up anything of value

EDIT: yikes $5.3M for three more years? That's a terrible contract. They might have to retain salary and/or give the Flames something to take it
