Imo, the All Star Game is a complete waste of time. Give them all a week's holiday mid-season, so then we have fresh legs on the marquee players for run to the playoffs.
Pro Bowl is just for laughs, it's not a hugely important corporate money maker for the NFL in Hawaii. Thus they don't fine or suspend players for not going.
For the NHL there are three guaranteed events on NBC National.

The home run derby, hardest shot competition and slam dunk contests are the only note-worthy events at an all-star weekend. I supposed the NBA all-star game is OK since it's basically a regular NBA game anyway with no defence and guys lollygagging around.
How can they suspend Toews and Ovi though if they actually have a verified injury?

I still like the ASG. I still put it on the DVR. It's tolerable if you can skip through the commercials.
I remember a time when the stats ticker on guys came through, and one of the accolades would be '6-time all-star'. Nowadays, it seems like no one cares. I mean, I was young when the ASG felt like it meant something.
As a kid, playing street hockey we'd have 'all-star skills' every now and then. It was a blast! Shootout. Hardest shot. Accuracy. Rapid Fire.
The challenge with the ASG is that the format keeps changing every year. Once upon a time, it was the only time of the year you could see a lot of shootouts. Now, we get those every 3rd game. And then we get 3on3 OT now too in regular season play. So, it seems like the ASG is just chasing the 'regular' NHL games. It's an arms race, and it gets more and more gimmicky each year. If things continue like this, I wonder if we'll have judges ruling on how 'awesome' a shootout goal was in regular season games.
Or... we could go back to a time when a tie was just a tie, there was no loser point, and you waited for the all-star game to see shootouts. And 0.500 actually meant something.

No a waste to the NHL. Nationally televised game that showcases the games biggest stars. Brings in a lot of new fans especially in non traditional markets like Nashville. This is how the NHL makes some major $$$ as well.
I'm not embarrassed to admit that I'm looking forward to the Skills competition and the 3 on 3 games. Should be pretty fun to watch. Already have 5 friends coming over for the skills on Sat night

Kill the tie with fire and bury it deep underground. The tie is the worst thing in sports.
Worse than the loser point? LoL, that's rich.
In sports, if there is no winner, then it's a tie. Ties make intuitive sense. The hack point system the NHL uses to attract fair weather fans needs to be "killed and burned"
