It's not just the fans.

I'm not arguing that it does mean anything. In fact, I've argued the exact opposite thing in this thread, including on the previous page.

I was responding to the suggestion that it's ridiculous that this is being discussed, by asserting that it is being discussed elsewhere and that the opinions there are opposite to the ones here.

Found a linked Twitter post on Washington Post sports with an alternate angle (not the greatest quality):

Yah a slowed down replay makes it look malicious. But has anybody every just had their bell run? Vision is weak, he's trying to change and isn't focused. Sees body rapidly approaching and throws hands up in defense. Looks worse than it was, no way anybody who has played more than novice hockey would intentionally do that.

And I'm sick of guys here just sewering wides. 56 points last year, and battled his ass off in the playoffs, was essentially our "playoff captain" (maybe Russ too) while gio was injured. And now everyone just wants to run this guy out of town. I get its a salary cap world and he's a vet trending down, but hell I've seen cp defend sarichs plug play for half a decade because of one hit on marleau in 07 or whenever. Give me a break. He might be having a tough year (along with half the damn team...) but don't tell me he doesn't care or he's a completely worthless player.

Do you guys really not see the shove? That wasn't "oh silly me I should watch where I'm going" contact. He benchpressed the ref.

Just really bizarre. If he doesn't have a concussion he should 100% be suspended.

No one has said this. Is this a straw man?

Sounds a bit like that ad populum thing we learned about earlier, no?

Wait what? He touched the ref I think we can all agree on that. Or are you nitpicking the ref/linesman thing?

And how can that be completely reactionary? Are you sure we're watching the same video? He's leisurely skating back to the bench on one skate, then like half a second before the ref comes he completely changes posture and leans his stick into the numbers. Do you really not see him lunge a bit? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

I'm surprised Hartley didn't follow the concussion protocol

I'm not a fan of Hartley, but he can't see the whole ice. At some point a player, especially one with Widemans experience, needs to take responsibility for his own actions.

It's ridiculous reading the tweets from hysterical Oiler fans. You would think Wideman killed someone.

It's obvious what happened, he was going for a change and didn't see the play coming back the other way so close to where he was skating because the play had gone up the ice.

When he sees the play coming he also sees the ref all at the last second and lifts his hands to squeeze by the ref and the play going by. Just not paying attention, the puck unexpectedly goes by and Weidman most likely expected the ref to move some how. He was like a little dejected kid skating back to the bench to change off not paying attention at all.
