I don't know about Faksa either. Maybe he is getting it together (finally) in the AHL this year - his stats sheet doesn't look too bad. However, he looked like a kid who was only getting worse since the draft. He is still a kid, so who knows, but I would hope the Flames are in on him only if it is a huge bargain.

Honka is a guy I would hope the Flames were looking at instead, though he is a sub-6 foot defencemen. Oleksiak intrigues me, and might be a better candidate in a 'change of scenery' situation, but again - only if it is a huge bargain. He just hasn't taken that next step - and I was extremely high on him that draft.

Nothing that is really standing out - Brett Ritchie might be the best fit there, but not a guy I really place too much on either. I look at him as a David Jones lite. Has to play a certain way to be effective, but then gets injured. He is only 22 (young, just like everyone I mentioned), but there is nothing that I find myself 'hoping' for from their AHL squad.

Dallas is making a run for it this year which is probably a mistake as they've cooled down significantly over the past two months or so.

They need better goaltending than Niemi has provided them and need to add two defencemen to make noise in the playoffs.

Hope Treliving can convince them to take on a couple Calgary defencemen.

Troock and Stransky are both big RW on the Stars AHL team. Troock is more of a depth guy than a scorer and Stransky is decent overall but is a bit on the slower side.

Gemel Smith is a decent depth C/RW as well.

The strength of the Stars farm system is their defense though.

Between Honka, Nemeth, Backman, Lindell, Johns, Hansson, and Bystrom, the Stars have a bunch of guys that are close to being NHL ready. If the Flames were to deal off a player or two to Dallas, I would not be surprised if defense prospects were the target. Backman and Lindell would both look good in a Flames jersey and would be more likely to be made available than a guy like Honka.

agreed bennet has way more skill but if im honest id say hes more dynamic than monohan . I really hope monohan gets split from gaudreu cause i want to see him carry it more. That will allow him easier defensive mathups as well but the problem is we have no one else ready to step in.

Kind of reminds me of Nashville from last year. Acquiring more players didn't help them at all.

Sounds like Ladd and the Jets are parting ways:
http://www.tsn.ca/it-s-time-for-the-...-ladd-1.428215

Quote:
At the heart of this malaise is the uncertainty created by the contract status of Ladd. He’s in the last year of his deal and a pending unrestricted free agent. All signs once pointed to Ladd re-signing with the Jets and remaining a fixture within the organization.

No longer. Talks with Ladd’s agents have broken off. In the meantime, Jets’ GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was recently seen huddling with defenceman Dustin Byfuglien’s representative.

Winnipeg has chosen Buff ahead of Ladd. It’s a reversal in direction that must have surprised the captain and his teammates.

This dressing room responds to its leader. When Ladd is right and pushing, the team has pace and a pulse. Now that he’s left hanging, the situation has become intolerable and needs to be solved.

Keeping Ladd is an unlikely proposition unless the player’s demands change dramatically. Ladd is after a six-year contract with an average annual value north of $6 million. That’s not going to happen in Winnipeg.

So it’s time to trade Ladd and make the most of what has disintegrated into a mess.
The Jets haven’t spoken in meaningful terms with Ladd’s camp for some time, instead focusing on Byfuglien.

The most likely outcome now is the Jets signing Byfuglien and then making Ladd available on the trade market. Executives around the NHL have told their pro scouts to compile reports on Ladd and to back off on the Byfuglien book.

I cant say I blame them for not signing Ladd to a 6x6. He's a good player but I'm not so sure he's going to be able to maintain his play into his mid-30's.

I get the feeling the market this year is going to resemble 2014 where a lot of names are out there but certain players may hold up others moving. I hope the Flames get out early and move Hudler quick instead of trying to get a max return and be stuck in a Cammalleri situation again.

Stamkos could be this years version of Kesler with guys like Ladd, Buff, Staal ahead of Hudler on teams wish lists

agreed.

Hope the flames try to move Hudler/Russel asap, and not wait till the deadline.

a loss tonight coupled with a Coyotes win would place us (fairly) firmly 8 points back of a playoff spot. I would hope that would be the tipping point, and allow Treliving to get out in front of some of the other teams as far as "selling" his UFAs.

If we could land a 2nd for Hudler and a 2nd for Russell, I'd be quite happy.

Treliving must see the next 3-5 games as the "that's it, I'm calling this season" strategy shift. With us losing what appears to be 2 out of 3 games regularly now, and other teams widening the distance, it can't be long before they mail it in. At which point I agree, they need to move Hudler and Russell out of the gate early so that teams aren't left fighting for resources when everyone else becomes available.

I agree that BT should be pushing our UFA's right now. Whispering in the ear of other GM's telling them that a guy like Russell or Hudler or Jones would either make a team pull away from the group or catch up and take a playoff spot.

As for Ladd, I don't think he's worth near 6x6 but I hope some team in the west gives it to him. I think he's good but I still think he's really over rated.

Just read a article on "the score" app about the leafs looking for a landing spot for Bernier. I still think the flames could look at this even if it is only at the backup level with some hope of upside. His 4 and change mill contract for next year should take care of much value in this one.

Im done with Hiller and less but still done with Ramo. Get bernier or Elliot, maybe both.

Still like both Tampa goalies. Bishop would be my favorite target.

There's 30 GM's in this league and not all of them are great at their jobs relative to the best ones. There is always going to be one or two of them that will badly overpay for players and as a GM you can never use those GM's as the base of your offers to retain players. You offer a number that works for the current and future salary structure of your team and if the player feels they can get a silly offer in free agency you simply have to let them go. For instance with Russell we know he's not a $4+ million defenseman but you just know that a team or two will offer that to him in free agency. As a GM you need to be able to just say "no" to trying to match that kind of money and finding a replacement from your organizational depth and if your organization lacks the depth to replace a player like Russell I would say you have an issue with scouting and development. You can't keep everyone in a hard salary cap yet that doesn't seem to stop NHL GM's from trying.

I wouldn't make a move on Bernier until the offseason as I expect the desire for the Leafs to unload his deal will be stronger prior to free agency. That said I wouldn't offer anything substantial for him as any team taking his contract is doing the Leafs a favor. He hasn't been that good this season so it's also a bit of blind faith that he's going to turn it around next season.

I 100% agree I just like that when some players hit the open market, GM's tend to get a little crazy and hand out bad contracts. I don't think Ladd is worth 6x6 but I think he'll get it and whenever bad contracts are given out by other GM's I see it as a good thing for the Flames. Like you said, Russell will likely get a bigger contract so I hope BT is using that while shopping him. Promoting what he'll be worth instead of what he is worth because his perceived value is more than his actual value at this point.

So my original point is that BT should shop now and I hope a team like Arizona, Vancouver or the sharks give a big contract to a guy who doesn't really deserve one.

Swap bad contracts, or ship Bernier here packaged with picks and prospects.

Ya im not saying trade for him and give up assets. I would be all for a Raymond for Bernier but would have a hard time thinking they would do this.

Maybe Engellund has some value to them.
