Furthermore:
Justin Trudeau advised to deepen ties with Saudi Arabia, brace for change in Iran
Quote:
Federal officials have told Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada's strategic interest would be well served by strengthening economic ties with oil-rich Saudi Arabia because of its powerful position in the Persian Gulf.
That advice sheds light on why the Liberals are rejecting calls to cancel a $15-billion sale of armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia following its execution last weekend of 47 people, including a prominent #####e cleric.
Canada's interests in the tumultuous region are spelled out in the briefings prepared for Trudeau, who faces calls to cancel the lucrative sale of light armoured vehicles by an Ontario company.
"Further deepening of strategic relations with the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries would serve Canadian commercial and possibly security interests," the memo states, pointing to Saudi Arabia as the leading player in the six-country bloc that includes the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

It's all about that money no matter where it comes from. Might as well be blood diamonds.

That was quick. I always knew the idealism of the campaign would turninto cold, hard reality as Justin has to answer to his masters, not the people that voted him in. Just like Obama, doing what he wants probably wouldn't be good for his health.

It's fine, guys, I doubt there was anything at all in there that could be seen as unfavourable to Saudi Arabia's largely irreproachable human rights record. No cause for concern at all.

I dunno. Given that 65% of the population in Iran is pretty young, I would much rather align Canada with Iran.

I don't know if it's only on Tapatalk, but did anyone else see what the forum censor did to that article quoted above?

That's odd... being a liberal government you'd think they wouldn't really align with Saudi Arabia. Really brutal, I wonder the rationale or strategic thinking here?

What the hell does Saudi have on Western government's that they are so afraid of? It's gotta be some serious blackmail material. If it was just about the oil, why does Canada care? We'd be better off without Saudi oil...

Oil. And they give our leaders lots of gifts.
$15B arms deal too. Pretty big deal to Canada. Equivalent to a $150B arms deal with the US.

Money. $15B is hard to turn down in a rough economy. Still hugely disappointed as a Canadian to be associated with such a place of scum and villainy like Saudi Arabia

a 15 billion dollar deal for Armored fighting vehicles is a big deal and a lot of jobs probably.
Sometimes you have to be pragmatic, plug your nose and just do it.

Saudi Arabia is quickly becoming one of the biggest reasons I can't wait until the world moves to a renewable energy program.
Yeah, it's still a while away, but I can dream.

General Dynamics (London Ont.) claim 500 employee's depend on the Saudi contract.
Considering Alberta is loosing at least 500 jobs a week partly because of Saudi Arabia I think the plant should be moved here.

Fyp
We should see if we can sell them some jump cables and car batteries as well while we're at, I'm sure they have way more
'interviews' to conduct these days.

Trudeau's positive campaign was a masterstroke. But the realities of governance are ugly and unavoidable as he'll learn over time.
