Lightning are paying 1/3 of Gagner's salary.

Flyers are only on hook for $3.3 million this year. The he is UFA.

No incentive for them to take on Raymond's extra year.

Yes on Gagner.

I'm surprised Gomez is still in the NHL.

I think they are trying to clear cap space to allow them to keep Gostisbehere up after Streit comes off the IR.

I think we'd be stupid not to consider picking him up. We need top six talent on the wing and he's a UFA. Id be supportive if Treliving grabbed him

Wow... Not knocking anyone's thoughts on picking up Gagner. But what does it say about our organizational need for someone to play on that line. To consider picking up Gagner off waivers to slot in for a top line RW.
This team needs a bonafide topline guy to play with JG and Money.

True, but the proper solutions require assets to acquire. Gagner is free to whomever claims him and is young enough where he might be useful as a stop gap 2nd/3rd liner until it can be properly addressed.

Worst case scenario is he plays at the same level as Raymond and you let him walk at the end of the year.

The problem is, you only get a bonafide top line guy by either developing one, trading for one, or signing one in the off-season. To be able to trade for one, you give up good assets (ie. 1st round pick, A level prospect, etc).

Flames are in a position right now where they're contending for a playoff spot, but also should be patient in not giving up long term assets as they're not cup contenders.

So picking up Gagner is more of a shot in the dark option, but it's something that you can explore without giving up anything if you feel he has the potential.

Personally, like I mentioned previously, I only do it if we can trade the Flyers Raymond.

Claiming Gagner off waivers without sending any salary out will leave the Flames with approximately $500k in cap space for the rest of the season. They will get a little more because they would have to send someone down.

It's terrifying how many garbage contracts have pilled up so quickly. Flames brass is going to have to be extremely careful going forward.

Thankfully, Treliving had the foresight to not sign anyone to more than a 2 or 3 year deal, so at least most of the garbage contracts expire so we have the space to sign Gaudreau and Mony to long term deals.

FWIW, the 11th highest scoring RW in the league this season is Lee Stempniak.

If it involves sending Raymond anywhere, then I'm all for it. The guy is useless at every facet of the game.

The Giordano extension looks really ominous from a value and cap perspective.

Sure it would be nice to trade Raymond for Gagner. Would have also been nice to win the lotto max.

Jury's still out on that one IMO. I'm confident Gio will find his game, and if it works out like how the Chara contract did in Boston, then I'll take the last year or two where Gio is overpaid for a chance at him leading the team to great heights. Guess we'll see.

It's crazy that the Flames have $12 million tied up in three bottom defensemen (two of whom frequently find themselves in the pressbox) until the end of 2017.

Why? he struggled for the first 22 games this season, but has returned to form in the last 13 putting up a PPG pace over that span.

He recovered from his arm injury and is back to how he was last year.

Is it worth mulling over all options to try to improve the team----yes.

After said consideration, just say NO to Gagner.
