Early in his shift, after Hamilton’s stick was broken in the defensive zone, it was Gaudreau who passed his to the blueliner, even though it’s way too short — Gaudreau is 5-foot-9 and Hamilton is 6-foot-6 — and curved the wrong way.

“I didn’t know if I was going to give it to him. He’s a righty and needed an extra foot-and-a-half,” Gaudreau chuckled.

Responded Hamilton: “I looked up we had (Markus) Granlund, (Mason) Raymond, and Johnny so I knew my options weren’t going to be good.”

To which head coach Bob Hartley added: “I was scared for his (Hamilton’s) back. I thought he would have to play on his knees. Hey, those are great reads and that’s hockey sense. Johnny recognized the situation and we got the puck out, that’s the only thing that counts.”

“He’s a special player,” veteran centre Matt Stajan said.

“I was talking to Boums (Lance Bouma) on the bench during the game when Johnny did one of his 360 moves, and said, ‘We’re playing with a special player here.’

“I think everybody here sees it every night. Here and now he’s really feeling it. He’s a big reason … probably the biggest reason for our success here lately on home ice and in general.”

“He’s a treat to watch for fans of both sides of any team,” captain Mark Giordano said. “This guy makes plays. He wants the puck and makes plays that make you go ‘Wow’ and shake your head while you’re out there with him.

“We were hoping they’d pull their goalie and try to get him that empty netter for another hat trick.”

That didn’t come, preventing him from being the first Flames player to collect consecutive hat tricks since Hakan Loob, but Gaudreau’s second tally of the night was certainly worth talking about, not only for the comedy factor but also its importance before the sellout crowd of 19,289.
