It's the Leafs, History isn't kind to the flames when we do trades with leafs...However IF the cost of Bernier was only Ramo or Hiller. I'd be okay with this. We could end up ahead. Worst case were not better off and stuck with Bernier for an extra season. More upside then down to this insane idea.

Those trades make no sense for the Leafs. Although Bernier has been brutal this season there is still potential he could be a good goalie.
Hiller is what he is. Leafs aren't going to be icing a competitive team next year so Bernier's cap hit is meaningless.
Leafs had Raymond before and they didn't want him then.

Another shutout for Bernier. First 3 games he's played he has 3 shutouts and has stopped 70 shots.

Now Bernier let in 5 goals on 21 shots. Haha. Right before they call him up too.
I think the guy needs to see the same therapist as Fleury.

Love this thread, because back when the Leaf's made the playoffs and there was Kipper talk I said they would require this to have a more successful run. Should have traded for kipper for anything back then. Too bad the Kipper retired.

The scuttlebutt was that Kipper made it known that he wouldn't report to his new team if he was traded.
For as much as we complain about the cap-circumvention contracts, Kipper's was the first, and as far as I know he is so far the only one who has ever actually retired for the retirement year(s) at the end (not counting Kovalchuk, who 'retired' before he even got into the meat of his contract).

Bernier has played nine games this year.
NINE GAMES.
In the two previous seasons he was a .912 and .923 goalie. Why on Earth would you think he was just going to turn into hot garbage all of a sudden on the basis of nine goddamn games? Is it that impossible to have a cold streak playing for the Maple Leafs, of all awful teams? They had what, 2 wins in their first 2 months?
This thread is all knee jerk.

You can look at it that way, or you can say he let in 5 goals in total in his 4 games... which translates to a 1.25 GAA.
Now, I'm not proclaiming he is either guy (1.25 or 5), but I still believe he would be the best trade option IF our cost remains LOW.

Really hope Flames are able to sucker Leafs into taking Hiller/Raymond for Bernier/scrub. It's about time the Leafs did us back a solid after getting bent over on the last couple of trades.

We should have got more for Dion at the time but I'm sure glad we are not paying him 7M per until 2021

Flames have discussed taking on Bernier’s contract
Quote:
|
“The Calgary Flames are looking at absolutely every possibility for a goaltender, and Bernier’s a guy who they have discussed in in the front office openly because there is a potential upside,” Francis explained. “I don’t see [Bernier’s upside], and I don’t think many people in Toronto see it. Babcock doesn’t see it. In Toronto, they just want to get rid of that guy.”

People are short sighted if they can't see Bernier's upside.
He has had .912 and .922 save percentages over full NHL seasons (50+ games).
Sure his mental game is off right now but if you can get them to keep some of the cap, or take a bad contract in return, then it is worth it.
With only 1 year after this one on that contract it doesn't hurt you too much long term if he doesn't find his past forum but if he does find his form you get a serviceable goalie for nothing.
