Yeah, me too! Weird, huh?
If a fence on the Mexican border is too expensive, what makes them think a fence on the Canadian border is at all practical. Yeesh. It's the "longest undefended border" for a reason, people.

Dumb and expensive idea since unlike Mexico I am guessing most illegal immigrants and suspected terrorists still come through border crossings.
Better security at border crossings is cheaper and will work better.

A 'fence' on the mexican border may be a good idea only if they do that and THEN legitimze the illegals after that. Illegals are often among the most hard working people in the country. Who can blame them for looking to do better for their families? But you have to have control of it in order to keep the hosting country the strongest economy in the world.
Hard situation.

sort of related, according to my school foreign student councelor here in NY, Canadians make up the largest number of illegal immigrants in the US.
I sort of find that hard to believe, even though i know about 5 Calgarians who graduated high school with me living just in this city alone.

Completely untrue--and if you think about it, it doesn't make sense. There are 13 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. There are only 30 million or so people in Canada To make up even half of that number, that would mean that 20% of Canadians were illegal immigrants living in the U.S.
Besides, Canadians don't need an entry visa, and it's easy to get a work permit. Why would we become undocumented workers when it's so much easier to do things legally? Many mexicans become illegals because they feel that they have no other choice.

hey i don think its true either.....the only reason i gave it any credence is because it came out of the mouth of a person whos job deals with immigration and foreigners.

What school do you go to in NY? That's pretty cool.
Looking over your original post, you did say "largest number," and not "most." So I guess I don't know--but I still find it kind of unlikely, for the other reasons I mentioned. In NY you may not see the huge numbers of migrant workers that we have in the midwest. Without illegal mexican immigrants, you couldn't grow corn, run a hog lot or fix a road in the state of Iowa, so that might colour my perspective on it.
This is actually one of the few issues that I kind of agree with Pres. Bush--in that there has to be a way to legitimize the presence of all of these workers and extend to them the legal benefits and protections of living here. That they came in illegally is irrelevant. There are 13 million of them--mass deportation is not practical, and probably not ethical.

Are you sure he didn't mean just NY? That I can believe... but the whole country? Not a chance.
