How much effort though? A few training camps be had to pay his own way to and some phone calls?
Again, from a strictly objective viewpoint, if there's a better chance of becoming an NHL regular on another team (not in the case specifically I believe), I feel the player should do what he can. That doesn't speak to character.
As a college athlete he's recieved nothing from the Flames and owes them nothing. He's received no discernible benefit from being drafted, so really there's no sent to be paid.
Having said that, there's certainly value in the having the flames have given him and instruction in camps, but the flames have also received value in having the ability to sign him before anyone else. If say that's pretty even.
I don't think Treliving tells him to play his final year though if it wasn't fait accompli that he signs. All this discussion is likely for naught

His dad would have also worked with Brad Pasqual in some capacity. Burke and Conroy are also well-respected in the college scene, with the added bonus of Burke being a Providence alum. we have 3 Providence players/alum in our system, one of whom is seemingly a good friend. Everything to me points towards Janko staying a Flame.
|
Agree with all of that, but, like I said, you couldn't blame him for thinking it. Maybe he's madly in love with a girl with two years remaining and wants to stay as close as possible? Lots of options in the vicinity. Again, not likely, but stranger things have happened. All that said, I think he'll sign.

Well, probably more than that. Treliving was out there last month for the weekend. Not saying a GM visiting his prospects is anything special but it's more then that. Based on a couple Jankowski interviews from the summer it seems like they've had a good line on communication.

If he projects himself to be a top 1 or 2 center in the NHL does he want to stick with the flames which are likely set at those positions?
Thats probably the only reason he would go UFA imo.

Are the Flames set at the #1 and #2 Center position? Monahan yes, but Bennett is finding his best success as a LW this season. I got roasted hard in the off season mentioning this but Bennett may be an elite LW just like Gaudreau instead of a center in the NHL. With Jankowskis size and playmaking ability, its not far fetched to think he'd be a more natural fit as the #2 C with Bennett Manning his LW. Can be an explosive duo for years and years.
In the end I think it is a good problem to have so many potential options. Granlund is in the mix as of right now as well.

I don't know that his value is much more than that right now. Yes he was a 1st rounder but it's more about his value now. I haven't watched his games but in the highlights, I don't see too much special there. Nothing to really wow you like Johnny was in college (not that this is a fair comparison). Good size and skills for sure, but at this point, I don't see much more than Joe Colborne.
Is Colborne worth a 2nd round pick?
|
Jankowski's value is probably very similar to Hayes in his final year.
I was all for going after Hayes, but I was surprised that the majority seemed to be against it. I think most would agree now that it would have been a good pickup.
I would much rather have Jankowski than a 2nd because he is already developed and you know what you're getting: size, hands, defensive smarts, and good speed.
Who wouldn't take that over a 2nd round pick?

Oh, and I think there is virtually no chance that he refuses to sign - like most players are with the team that drafted him, he seems thrilled with the Flames organization for being the ones to show faith in him and make him a 1st round pick.
Likelihood of walking: less than 5% IMO (probably much less)

5% chance seems awfully high for virtually no chance... no?

I don't disagree they've had communication and the relationship seems good, that's not my point. I'm arguing against the "character" issue of college players not signing. These college players have received little or nothing from the team that drafted them and don't owe the team that drafted them much if anything. From an ethical perspective there's nothing wrong with choosing the best chance for an NHL career. The difference between an NHLer and a career minor leaguer is often opportunity. Can't blame someone for choosing that

Often the team that drafted the player will give the best opportunity just because they have something invested and have plans for the player. Look what's happened to Tom when he probably would have gotten a better chance here.
Also a second rounder replacement would suck at this stage. We've already waited 4 years (and probably another year in the A). A second rounder would maybe take another 5 years if and when he's ready, so that's 9 years before we see anything.

None that makes a person who chooses to sign elsewhere "of poorer character" though

I think you would be hard-pressed to find a 2nd rounder with the talent level of Jankowski without fluking across a total outlier like David Krejci or Jamie Benn.

typically it doesn't take 4-5 years to figure out if a prospect is going to make it or not...if it does take that long they are very likely not going to make it.
Let's hope Janko is the exception.

Skill and potential aside, we could use more 6'4 guys that play more than 8 minutes a night.
