I have found that this almost always holds true.
Born and raised Calgarian, but I say CAL-gary and Sas-KATCH-ew-an. It's really just because I care about enunciation though.

Everyone I know from eastern Canada(myself included) pronounce it this way, to go a little farther a lot of maritimers say British Columbia instead of "BC" (myself not included)

Just to add to the pronunciation issues, people who pronounce Toronto that annunciate the last T. Tor-on-toe vs. Tor-onno.

I LOVED that episode. My wife made me listen to it and didn't tell me what it was about. I felt like the majority of my childhood had been a lie. It was kind of like when the kid in A Christmas Story decodes the secret message.

Same. I don't know how people who say 'CAL-gree' can scoff at those like George W. Bush who say 'NOO-kyuh-lur.' And don't get me started on 'WES-trin' and 'JOO-ler-ee.'

The key difference is that Cal-gree is actually correct.

Not sure why there is any debate. It's clearly Cal-gree. Any other pronunciation is just plain wrong.

I think Cal-gree or Cal-guhree are both acceptable.

Cal-gary is a huge gear grinder for me

There is a vowel between the consonants "g" and "r", so I don't see how it can be incorrect to have a syllable there.

I can't think of too many word where a vowel between 2 consonants isn't pronounced, at least a little (excluding compound words where the re is a silent vowel at the end of the first word, usually an "e"). A silent "a" in the middle of a word seems weird in English.

There are all sorts of names that aren't pronounced like they are spelled.

There's a difference between not pronouncing something the way it is spelled and pronouncing it correctly. A lot of people from Toronto pronounce it like "Trah-no", but I wouldn't say that it is the correct pronunciation.

So you don't properly pronounce the name of the city you were born and raised in?

Is Nawlins the proper pronunciation of New Orleans, or just the way a lot of people say it?

I say it the way the woman in the "Hello" song upthread says it: CAL-gihree. The announcer at the Dome also says it that way - with three syllables and a soft vowel between the g and ree. He doesn't say "your CAL-gree Flames!"

Cal-gree is the correct way to say it.
