I'm not sure when it happened but Chrome added a bunch of touch support, including back and forward gestures. I've been missing that badly since 8.1. Text entry seems funny with no autocorrecr, auto caps or double space for periods, but you can actually hit the 'new post' button on CP unlike Edge.

It was added in chrome canary early last year. I had been running chrome on my surface since canary's release. It's more power hungry then edge but I like it better for touch devices.

After a brief trial, overall, Chrome still sucks on a Surface.

Touch gesture navigation for Edge is needed so, so badly. So are fixes for the crashes.

shout out to Hemi-cube for his solid advice on me getting past my computers doesn't want to upgrade to windows 10.

I downloaded the media, ran the update and 30 minutes later I was running windows 10.

Thanks a ton.

Another fun quirk, that "UPGRADE NOW OR UPGRADE NOW" forever popup stops my computer from installing any new security patches, after some trial and error I figured out if I reboot, and then start windows update and get the patches installing before the popup appears I can sometimes manage to get them all installed (though sometimes it seems to take more than one reboot). Good times.

At least MS will update Windows 10 so you can use Windows 7/8/8.1 keys for a fresh install, still is confusing as to how it'll know my Windows 10 is a free-in-the-first-year version or not though...

ok MS enthusiasts, it's Surface 4 decision time. trying to pick between i5 with 16GB memory, or i7 with 8GB...they come out to around the same price. aside from the usual surfing and office applications, probably the most stressful thing it'll be doing is Photoshop/Lightroom, and maybe occasionally some Premiere.

I know generally having plenty of memory to spare is always good, but my main desktop has 16GB and I've never really seen it close to being used, even when I have a dozen things open at once. conversely, the CPU will max out if I'm doing video encoding, which tells me that's the limiting factor for that kind of thing. yes I know the best solution would be to throw another few hundred bucks in and just supersize everything, but if you had to choose what would it be?

If you're doing things that are more CPU intensive, better processor is the winner. You said yourself that the 16 gigs of RAM isn't usually being used anywhere near its limits. Go with the i7.

I have to choose between a SP4 and a Surface Book. The model of SP4 I can get is the i5 / 16 GB / 256 GB SSD and the Surface Book is the i5 / 8 GB / 256 GB SSD. On the face of it, the Surface Pro 4 seems like the no-brainer purely on specs. But like you, I find I'm never anywhere close to hitting the 8 GB RAM on my current laptop. All my virtual machines are on my home lab with 32 GB of RAM, or in Azure. But the bigger screen, and substantially longer battery life of the Surface Book are appealing. So it's more-than-likely that I'll do a Surface Book.

Being someone who owned a i7 and i5 surface 3 I would personally go with the i5 and 16gb. I went to the i7 after the i5 and actually went back to the i5 because of the throttling and heat from the i7.

I don't know if heat and throttling will be an issue with the newest model but IMO the i5 is more than powerful enough to do what you want and the 16gb ram is more attractive for lightroom.

I have 2 MacBooks and i went with i5's as well and have been extremely happy with the performance.

I echo the comment above that the surface book is where i would go.

haha conflicting advice makes me even more confused...but thanks anyhow. maybe the one extra consideration in this is that the resource intensive content editing will likely be done mostly while the Surface is docked, where the battery life/throttling won't be factors. when in tablet mode, it'll be more of the surfing and editing docs.

of course, there isn't really a truly wrong choice here...just having a SP4 is a win on its own.

The main benefit of the i7 in the surface pro 4 is in 3d graphics performance.

Windows Hello Facial Recognition has been activated, and will be available when the new Surfaces lunch this week.

A brief article from Anandtech included this:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again here now. Windows Hello is one of those Wow moments in computing which are few and far between. It really feels like the future.

Had an initial hiccup with this but looks like the deal is going to be completed okay. Basically a free controller if you got in.

Just checking, but is Cortana officially available in Canada now?
I checked last night, but it still says my region wasn't supported, even though the webpage it sent me to said it was.

I've already forgotten Cortana exists. Maybe I'm missing something useful but so far it doesn't feel like it.

You need to go into the settings>Time & Language>Region & Language, select English (Canada)>Options, and make sure all language packages are downloaded and installed.

It now finally works for me with Canada as my Country.

If you want to get the big Win 10 November update, but haven't gotten it under your regular update channel yet, try this:

http://www.groovypost.com/howto/inst...creation-tool/

EDIT: only installs to a 10240 version then you'll have to get the 10514(?) November version via updates.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

^ this is back to being the 1511 version now, and it is well worth the time to upgrade it. Not everything is fixed, but it is smoother and more stable...

I picked up a Surface 3 LTE at the Microsoft Store in Chinook. Base model, plus the Type Cover and a matching Surface Pen (not the new SP4 pen) in blue.

I already had an LTE Windows tablet (Samsung ATIV SmartPC 500T), but I've wanted a proper drawing experience on a tablet. The Canadian version of the 500T doesn't have the Samsung S-Pen (nor the required digitizer), so I'm going to sell it. It (finally) works great on Windows 10 with the November update, so it's not a bad deal.

Loaded up Photoshop, Fireworks, and Manga Studio 5 on the S3, and once the new WinTab driver was installed (damn Photoshop) everything worked beautifully. Photoshop works with gestures for zoom and pressure sensitivity with the WinTab driver installed.

Pretty happy with my "Black Friday" purchases.

Well, my computer decided it was time to upgrade, and I went along with it. So far it looks like Windows 7 and acts like Windows 7 except it's been hit by the ugly stick.

Edit: volume button in taskbar no longer goes directly to volume mixer, boo...
