I never said that. I said he was the only possible MSL candidate in terms of "regretting the trade" as the previous poster mentioned. I meant it in terms of the ability to make us regret. If anything, it clarifies more when you note that the original post I quoted mentioned Berra as being a trade that bites us like MSL. (Though IIRC, MSL wasn't traded and I don't think Berra will hurt us as much as MSL did)

See above. There is no bet. I'm not saying Byron will be MSL. I meant his ability to make us regret something may possibly rival MSL. If he even achieves half of what MSL did, good for him, but no IMO way he matches the entire career of MSL. But making us regret could be as simple as being the GWG or making a great block on an open net on a tying goal on a must win game we need to win to enter playoffs.

Again, I meant that comment in terms of him potentially hurting us long term, like MSL did as a member of Tampa. Not that Byron will suddenly become the Art Ross, Cup Champ player MSL became. And again, I don't believe Berra will ever come as close to being as big of a "regret" as MSL.

Always liked Berra, and he still has loads of potential. Wasn't it Cloutier (or was it Malarchuck?) that stated Berra has the fastest legs they have seen on a big goalie? He was (and still is) loaded with potential, but was always a work in progress. I always thought he would make it given enough time and coaching to develop.

With that being said, Flames make that trade 10 out of 10. Entering a rebuild. Berra would have taken more time to develop than the time it would take to become waiver eligible. There is no guarantees to any prospect's development. Avs offered what was perceived as an over-payment on a very stingy deadline.

Yep, 10 out of 10 times you would hope the Flames make a deal given Berra's age. If he pans out into something (which I think he will), then it just might be a case of both teams 'win'.

So with your scenario, we regret giving up a single goal, or a single point in the standings.

With MSL, we regret missing out on the entire productive career of a player who will almost certainly end up in the Hall of Fame.

If you think these two regrets are equal or even comparable, you desperately need to go out and find yourself a sense of proportion.

EDIT: Not worth it.

Let's just chalk it up to hyperbole to the maximum and some posters looking to vent due to the poor season.

I think Berra is just having a hot-streak, coupled with good team-work by the Avs.

He definitely had great athleticism for his size and was my favorite when we have both him and Ramo.

At best (or at worst?), the most valid comparison for this situation is Jean-Sébastien Giguère. The Flames also traded him away for a 2nd and Giguere ended with a long career as a Conn Smyth and Stanley Cup Winning goalie. I don't think Berra has that kind of longevity and is just having a run of the flashes of brilliance we saw from time to time.

Berra always had the size and athleticism to be a good goalie.

It was his positioning and technical play that were not developed yet.

Not that surprised that with some good coaching from Francois Allaire and Patrick Roy that he may start to put it all together.

My favourite part about Berra was his .897SV% and 2.95GAA.

Lol, Berra, maybe we just need a goaltending coach as well

Not me. He was an athletic guy that was even more spastic than Ramo. Maybe he's been better coached and has worked hard on his weaknesses but I have also seen a lot of goaltenders come out of nowhere to be all world only to fade back to obscurity a year later so I will judge him by his body of work and not just a hot streak.

I guess I was being too polite...I've never liked Berra. I do like his current nickname.

If Berra turns into a starting goalie, say bottom 15 in the league, the Avs might be able to get a 2nd for him in a trade.

I liked Berra but didn't think much of him as a goalie

(Sure I thought there was potential there, but all goalies that play in the league are either good or they have potential.)

I'd rather have Hunter Smith. I'm still bullish on the 6'7" late bloomer. A big strong RW with net presence and an appetite for crease garbage collection is exactly what this team needs.

We need a top 6 player who can do those things, though I admit Smith could be very useful if all goes well (a bigger, much less talented Ferland). I just can't shake the feeling that he never would've even been drafted if he was even 4 inches shorter. Are those 4 inches really that important when it comes down to it? 6'3" is big and pretty easily found throughout the league if you're looking for generic 4th liners. Smith's biggest hope in becoming a generic 4th liner likely comes down to just how much a GM covets those 4 extra inches IMO.

I think return could be similar to what Rangers received for Talbot. Multiple picks including a second. If he keeps playing like this.

You need to give some credit to the Avs for picking up a goalie for a 2nd who at this point, looks to be growing into a NHLer. I still think the Flames logic in trading him was sound.

He would have been a UFA had we not traded him, and I think it's unlikely we would have tried to re-sign him based on potential only (we ended up getting Hiller instead). No doubt Colorado would have pushed hard to get him as a UFA so there was a real possibility of losing him for nothing. A draft pick (and specifically a second rounder) was and is a great return.

I agree that the credit here goes to Colorado's management/coaching (i.e. Roy/Allaire) and Reto for the patience and work in developing his game -- something that likely would not have happened here. It was a gamble considering the price tag but it is starting to pay off for them.

I see him as a bigger more talented Ferland who played a significant role in winning a Memorial Cup. He has a great attitude.

My hope is that he becomes a 2-3 line reliable long term guy whose 20 or so goals every year come from PP time.

I believe anyone expressing concerns at this stage did not read the wrapper. He needs a few years to ripen. When he is ready you better believe I'll dig up this post.

Re: Berra, he is about the same as Ramo. It was a miaracle to get a sencond for him regardless of whether he becomes the next Peter Budaj or not. IMO that's his ceiling.

Despite some good play he is waaaaaaay off being worth a 2nd. Colorado were stupid to trade that pick. Especially if Hunter spend the next 15 years injuring their players with clean hits.
