UPD: John Gillies to have surgery. Out 4-6 months
http://www.tsn.ca/mondaymustread-fru...burgh-1.394537
Quote:
Flames goaltending prospect Jon Gillies is dealing with a lingering hip issue that may require surgery. Canucks prospect Thatcher Demko underwent surgery for a similar hip ailment last season and he’s rebounded at Boston College for seven shutouts in 10 games this year.
|
Demko underwent a double hip surgery to repair his labrums. Before the surgery, he was in pain every time he stretched his leg. Demko actually played through the pain in 2014, deciding he would rather not miss any hockey.
Demko had the surgery in early May 2015 and there were some questions if he would be ready for the start of the season in October. He managed not to miss any games and has been lights out ever since.
The surgery is pretty common for goalies. Rinne also has had this surgery and it kept him out 4 months (well 5 if you include the infection he developed)
It looks like Hiller also once had this type of surgery too.

Still you hate to see him miss most of a season of development. Just makes Treliving's job a lot harder now as he needs to find something better than a stop gap goaltender this offseason as it's going to be a few years now until anything comes up from the system to help out. It's like the Flames are paying for last season as not a lot of good things happening in the organization right now.

Isn't this the surgery that makes goalies better? I didn't click on the link, but IIRC, that is what a number of goalies go through and they usually come out with better hips than their original pre-injured hips, no? Might be mixed up in procedures here.

This explains the Poulin trade last week. I believe he first had troubles with his hip either during or just prior to the World Juniors two years ago.
It's better to get it fixed now than to let it linger.

Well good thing we got Poulin then. Will we see Ortio go down to play on the farm now?

It wouldn't surprise me to see Ortio sent down once Hiller is back. I can't see any team claiming him off waivers at this point.

With the way this season is going do you want to take that chance?

Yea he'd probably get claimed and then win the Hart trophy with his new team.

Ortio is more of a bust than boom so far... and Gillies going under the knife.
Should we re-sign Ramo and Hiller now, or wait a couple months...?

Well, based on performance, either one should feel lucky to get 1 year for $1 million, so now is the time.

I was not seriously suggesting re-signing him.

The article doesn't specify the exact type of injury/surgery Gillies may be having, other than saying it's "similar" to Thatcher Demko's "hip ailment".
Specifically, here is an article on Demko's double hip surgery: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=774401
Apparently it can improve mobility and flexibility and reduce the risk of future hip problems. It also says its related to the surgery that Rinne had (and as Sureloss noted in the OP), and is becoming as common for goalies as Tommy John surgery for baseball pitchers...

I see those Demko numbers and think Macdonald. Not sure we picked the right guy.

Get the surgery out of the way now so when he's ready to be tested in the NHL he's 100%.

Numbers don't tell the whole story. Wait and see until they're both in the AHL. The Q and NCAA are two completely different leagues so you can't really rely on stats to compare the guys

I assume we send Ortio down. If you can't play goalie for the Flames this year hard to imagine another team keeping you on the roster all season.
This has been quite the season of good news on the goalie front. Luckily Reto Berra is still playing horribly. Oh wait. And looks like Brossoit is having a good season in the A. Can't wait for him to start tearing it up in the NHL.
Sigh.
