It's still just speculation that Gio is playing injured. He said he was 100% back in Sept. before training camp, so I'm not sure there is any reason not to believe it.

Duncan Keith just returned from knee surgery, and he doesn't look rusty at all. His style of play is exactly like it was before he was injured.

I really hope Gio turns things around soon, but maybe he's not the elite D-man everyone thought he was.

Id prefer at this point to keep him if they can get him for a better contract. It was not the Flames brass that gave him that money to start . It was a contrsct the Flames needed to take on to get rid of 2 aging players that no longer fit within the organization. David Jones is the type of player you want the young guys around. He doesn't take a shift off . He hits , he mucks it up along the boards and drives the net.

Its actually hard for me to believe he is 31 this year. I wouldn't mind having him for around for another year if he keeps up his play.

What a player tells the media and what is the truth is different.

He most likely is not an elite player tho. If he was elite he would have shown it before hitting 30. There are lots of guys who have a good year before going back to regular form. Look at Tim thomas, Ilya Bryzgalov

I can. He is working with what he has. It might not be what every one wants to hear but maybe the Flames at this moment just are not as good as everyone wishes they could be. The pieces are their to work on and improve but last year they had more luck then they are getting now. Its a younger team then even last year . They were lucky to get in the playoffs . The Kings win in that last meeting and Calgary doesn't get in and it is the Kings getting in again. One lucky season has thrown off all resonable perspectives of this team.

Our problems are systematic. We're married to a defensive system for (likely) the remainder of the season that doesn't work. I don't think Hartley will be fired, but he'll be tasked with fixing an utterly broken strategy in the off-season - and if it doesn't show early next year, he may be in trouble.

This is a team issue, not an individual player problem.

Too easy to blame the coach. What do you expect him to do?

I hope Zedeno Chara is the brother of Zdeno Chara.

Start sitting some players who deserve to sit; Wideman, Gio etc for starters.

Last year Wideman "figured" out his game when he was a healthy scratch.

I know he doesn't have confidence in the young netminder but pinning his ass to the bench for weeks won't help either.

Break up the top line. Hudler is useless and has been all season but he's still up on the top line.

Break up Wideman-Russell

There's a lot of things that can be done but for now Hartley has been stubborn, according to him what worked last year has to work this year too.

Always hated Hartley as our coach and had to bite my tongue as he won coach of the year, I even disliked him when he won a cup as a coach as I felt he was just lucky.

After reading this some might think I'll backtrack/change my mind and start supporting him now...think again, he's still a bum and I can't stand him as a coach.

Wideman is Sarich slow...with less hockey sense. I cringe when he is on the ice defending.

I'm fine with having an off-year. Totally fine with it. We'll get another great draft pick to join our already awesome young core.

What I am not fine with is watching this team get totally outplayed. They lose puck battles, have been AWFUL in their own zone, and just seem uninterested. I don't know what happened to Hudler but he has been invisible this year. I'd be less upset if they were losing close 3-2, 2-1 games but they're getting blown out and looking absolutely out-classed. At least two years ago I got excited to watch. Now watching just feels like a chore. I will still watch though because I love this team and will always cheer for a win, but man this is tough to watch.

The important thing is that spots can and will be cleared out as the season progresses, and more of the young talent that this team needs will be ready to come up.

Hoping they can offload UFA's at the deadline for picks and then package those picks in the off season again.

Couldn't watch the third period - just didn't have it in me after the first two.

Interest slowly waning in this team, especially with so many other things going on at this time of year. Sad that after such excitement last year we end up with this mess.

With each passing mediocre game by Gio, I grow more and more terrified about his lengthy extension. He must still be experiencing issues with his injured bicep? I can't remember the last time he took a one-timer. In any case, the further into the season we get, the more I'm worried that we jumped the gun on re-signing him. Granted, the whole team is struggling, but that hasn't stopped players like Bennett, Gaudreau and Brodie from looking good.
Lots of time for Gio to redeem himself obviously, but if this is what we can expect going forward, building a contender with that much money tied up in an aging defenseman will be hugely problematic.
