Black Friday 2015 - Deals and Advice
As title suggests, a spot to put general Black Friday questions, advice and deals people may want to know about.
Don't normally get into this day because I find it gets more attention than it deserves (referring to Canada, where the deals never seem too crazy). This year, however, I've been looking to get a new iPhone already, so thought I'd hold out and see if there would be any discounts. So, thread for all Black Friday talk, but personally looking for any advice on the least expensive way to get an iPhone. Prefer to buy the phone outright with no contract.

I'm hoping BestBuy has a 60"+ 4K for a good price on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Good luck getting any kind of discount on that. Apple keeps really tight tabs on supplies/pricing on their stuff, and in the last few years has replaced any seasonal promotions with gift card/iTunes credit in lieu of discounts.
If you wait for Black Friday you *might* get a $200 iTunes card with purchase, or possible a discount of less then 5%... with contract.
So you might be able to get the gift card and toss it on kijiji to offset the cost a bit, but discounts on new in box Apple devices are hard to find, and even harder on iPhones.

I'm looking for something like that too.
Does Best Buy make a big deal/have big deals on that day, or is it a lot of hype? I've never Cyber Mondayed before, and I'm an impatient child and want a new TV yesterday and I don't want to wait just for nothing!

Funny I too am looking at a 60" UHD as a possible purchase.
Was in Best Buy and was really quite impressed with an LG model that's on sale til next Thursday.

I'm in no rush so I'm too waiting to at least next week if not boxing day, but this one struck me as a pretty good deal on its own and I almost pulled the trigger.

I don't think it's as big of a deal as it is in the States but it's worth looking into. Boxing Day is still when to find the best deals usually.

I'm shopping for the same thing. Right now I'm sitting tight to see what happens with the black Friday / cyber Monday sales but if nothing pops up I'm leaning towards this:
http://www.costco.ca/Vizio%C2%AE--M6...100171642.html
The consumer reports reviews for Vizio are pretty good and the price is right. But most importantly for me it has 5 HDMI input. I have an HDMI switch for my current TV but it drives me nuts. Why most TV's have only 2 or 3 HDMI inputs is beyond me.

Sadly yes, and while Canada isn't quite up to U.S. speed on sheer stupidity during it, we're rapidly making headway on that each passing year. >.<

In that people seem to think buying 4k LED televisions is a smart thing to do, or for some other reason?

He thinks his 17" black and white TV is just fine and can't understand anyone wanting something better.

Nah, I love a deal as much as the next guy, and I have no problem with a 4k LED catching my eye. I meant more the "me first, me only, me" mentality and boorish behavior. Luckily we aren't up to shooting yet, and we've only had 1 stabbing I know of. Mostly so far we just fistfight (esp over parking...). I'm mostly just being gloomy, but I really hope that we don't slide too far into the same behavior that the States is mocked worldwide for on Black Friday.

Is there any true 4K content these days? I hear Netflix is streaming a watered down version? Is it better to get a really good 1080p, or a mid to low level 4K? Haven't bought a TV in a few years.
My plan was to wait for OLED 4K to get mainstream which seems 5 years out. Maybe worth looking at a cheaper and better picture 1080p to tide you over? Just a thought.

I was kind of kidding, but 4k LED TV's have no particular benefit over 1080p in formats we're talking about here, like 60" sizes, unless you're sitting five feet from the screen. The TV's themselves produce lower quality images than what was being sold 2-3 years ago. It's largely a marketing ploy to be able to sell panels that are cheap to produce (relatively) for higher prices and convince people they need the next generation technology.
OldDutch is right, OLED is really what you'd want if you want actual next-generation technology, but they're extremely expensive because it costs a lot to actually produce the panels as no one has figured out a way to do it efficiently.

Best advice is that BF and Boxing Day deals aren't really deals.
You can get them all throughout the year, and generally you can find it 10-20% cheaper if you keep a lookout.
It's a great day to get a reasonable deal on something you impulsively want since everything is on "sale", but don't go overboard because the deals really aren't that good.
