I agree that waiting till the trade deadline is probably the way to go. Who knows, you can have a team or two in the ultra competitive Central Division who got a key injury to their defence, and are willing to overpay for a Russell or a Wideman in order to stay in the playoff hunt.

I expected this team to be easily a top 3 in the pacific this year. The fact they suck is unfortunate but I am no where near as angry as I was in 09/10 when they melted down.

I look at our free agents and see value there.
Jones- mid pick like a 3rd
Hudler - 2nd and a prospect
Russell - 2nd, 3rd
Hiller - 6th at the deadline
Ramo - 7th at the deadline
Agree. Year 3 of rebuild, is okay for a bit of regression. We are still lacking finish and skill offensively on the wing.

Hudler is a top 6 forward that would upgrade a 2nd line or perhaps 1st line wing for a few teams. He was tied for 8th in scoring last year, Lady Byng and prior Cup winner (2008).
I think a late 1st round pick is possible near the trade deadline with a team needing a little more skill for a long playoff push.

Russell is struggling too much with +/- this year to garner a 2nd and 3rd. I would take a 2nd. But Tre might pull a Glencross trade you never know.

Jones, Hiller, Ramo sound about right. Will be lucky to get any picks from our goalies I fear.

I think Russell playing badly might be a blessing in disguise if it means we can re-sign him cheap. He put up 34 points and was +18 last year. He is a leader in the room and was our second best player in the playoffs. He will bounce back

If your the top shot blocker in the league it's not just because your amazeballs at blocking shots. It is because you play in your own end WAY too much.

This probably belongs in the trade speculation and rumours thread, but Ryan Murray is a healthy scratch for the Blue Jackets tonight. We all know how much Torts likes guys who block shots.

I really think we need to shore up our D prospects desperately if Gio and Russell don't improve. #1 D is our biggest hole right now and if it continues to be then we're hooped cause no one on the farm even has that potential at this point.

Time to abolish the notion that trading players, even significant players is 'blowing it up'.

Trading Hudler and Russell this year should've been automatic. In my opinion, trading Giordano during the offseason should have been automatic.

Unfortunately, the magical run last year pulled the wool over our collective eyes about where the team was in it's evolution towards a contender, but this start should be a blessing in disguise to disavow that notion that Calgary is anywhere near being a contender.

Time to trade off some players and accumulate some picks. Another Monahan or Bennett draft with multiple bullets in the chamber is exactly what this team needs. Trade Russell, draft a top defensive prospect.

I think the team needs to seriously explore moving Giordano as well. That contract makes no sense for where the team is at right now.

No one is going to take that contract on when the Giordano of the last two seasons is MIA and has been replaced with a fringe 2nd pairing pylon that takes moronic penalties.

Wouldn't mind seeing Treliving attempt to pawn off some almost but not quite prospects for picks either. Nothing major obviously but he turned Baertschi and Reinhart into a 2nd 3rd and a 4th. If he can work the phones and get a team to take Grandlund or Wotherspoon for a couple 4th's or somehow a 3rd it would be more pick arrows in the draft quiver.

Untouchables (unless the deal is ridiculously good for the Flames) are Brodie, Hamilton, Gaudreau, Bennett, and Monahan.

Need to start trying to trade Hudler, Jones, Wideman, and Russell if there is a market for them.

Everyone else on the team is tradeable.
Anyone not on the roster but in the system who you would deem more untouchable than tradeable? Just wondering if guys like Poirier, Klimchuk, Jankowski, and Gillies being dangled would make you uncomfortable or not. Personally, I'm not sure I'd want to see Gillies being shopped around or on the table if someone came calling. Not sure about anyone else in the system though.

He has previously shown to be great at faceoffs (a perpetual Flames need) and seems like the player you want for the bottom 6: showing up defensively and making solid, quiet plays.

He also managed 4 points between van Brabant and Smith...which isn't terrible given the other two are at 1 point combined.

Gillies is the only one I'd call untradeable. Kylington and Andersson should also be off the table unless something really great comes up. Everyone else I'd be okay with exploring options.

Poirier had a great 1st year pro but only has 3 points in 8 games this year... Everyone else hasn't really showed anything that even solidifies them as a future NHL'er, which is what worries me the most.

To be fair you're in a constant state of worry or fear.

I just see a guy who has never pushed for a roster spot on the big club.

Max Reinhart I viewed in the same way. If the guy isn't ever going to crack the club, you want to move that guy before everyone elses realizes the same thing. He's from the same draft class as Reinhart and Ferland, and he looks a hell of a lot more like a Reinhart than he does a Ferland.

If he has value out there, I don't see the point in protecting him. Maybe he has no value though? I dunno. Some Flames fans seem to love him but I've never understood why.

Since Brodie returned the Flames are 4 and 4. They have had a couple bad games but for the most part are out playing their oppenents. Ramo also has look better of late. Chances of making the playoffs is slowly getting close to 0 so I'm all for trading guys away but the team is much better than they have played to this point and there are still lots of positives

We made fun of the Oilers handsomely rewarding overachievers (Horcoff, Pisani, etc) the offseason of 2006 when they made their fluke Stanley Cup run but really what happened with the Flames wasn't a lot different. Gio got rewarded with a deal he would have never got had the team finished bottom 10, they paid over $3 million for Ramo, and they were trying to resign Russell to some god awful overpayment. It's why people always talk about staying the course but it's really hard to when success comes unexpectedly early as teams see success and then desperately feel they need to keep everyone together without taking a deep breath and taking a step back. There was no good reason to sign Giordano to that deal after a career season when he still had a year remaining on his contract.

The Equipment Manager has been doing a fine job.

Also the guy that stacks the pucks into that fine pyramid before each game. Top notch stuff.
