It's also incredibly wrong, another case of clickbait headlines that have almost no relation to what's actually in the article (and the article having almost no relation to the actual science).

The flare is from the stuff surrounding the black hole, not from within the black hole itself.

Is that an actual picture or just an artist's rendering?

The alien mega structure planet isn't showing any signs of radio waves yet according to SETI.

Quote:
[Two different types of radio signals were sought: (1) Narrow-band transmissions, of order 1 Hz in width, that could be used as a “hailing signal” for societies wishing to betray their presence, and, (2) Broad-band signals produced by intense microwaves used to propel rockets servicing the megastructure.

Analysis of the Array data show no clear evidence for either type of signal between the frequencies of 1 and 10 GHz. This rules out omnidirectional transmitters of less than approximately 100 times today’s total terrestrial energy usage in the case of the narrow-band signals, and ten million times that usage for broad band emissions.

Very possible that they out grew radio transmitting.

Maybe they never developed it in the first place and use a whole doesn't type of communication system.

Scientists should probably set their sensors to detect signs of Beta-Max and HD-DVD

Or the opposite, also possible that they went from radio stage to superstructure stage in less than the 1480 years it would take for their signals to reach earth.

Or, it's almost certainly not an alien mega structure at all and it's hilarious that people are speculating about this.

Hey, this actually makes no sense at all! Because obviously the light we are seeing is 1480 years old as well, and would arrive around the same time as any radio waves from the system. Man, you're an idiot octothorp.

Why is it hilarious? Everyone understands this is the least likely explanation, but it is an explanation postulated by the scientists themselves.

It is fun to think about, and helps us to refine how we might detect alien technology in the future.

Or it could be Matt Damon once again stranded somewhere and wanting help.

"The least likely explanation"

So far none of the explanations make sense. They all have a flaw. Even the comet cloud.

The only flaw with the alien explanation seems to be "Naaaaaah, it can't be, can it?"

Only way to find out is to keep observing it.

It comes from science desperately clinging to the margin of returns. There isn't much more we can learn, so we make up potential scenarios that keep us all somewhat invested in the process.

Why do you have such a negative outlook on Scientific advancement.

15 years ago we didn't even know about other planets. Now we can observe them with such detail that we can notice anomalies that set our imaginations running wild, a scientific gold mine, and you're here raining on the parade.
