Im not clear which side of the argument you are on.
If you demand low prices above all else, then expect cramped seating and know that those seats recline. Unless its your first time flying, you should know what you get in economy class. If you want more room, pay more to sit in business class.

Yeah, I'll just work on some Excel macros and throw the results into my analytics tool, then move the results to Word or PowerPoint using an iPad. An fn iPad.

That is the point. Consumers, by the choices they have made in repeatedly rejecting 'premium' airlines, have spoken by saying price is the most important consideration. That has resulted in cramped seating and, quite frankly, really uncomfortable travel (outside of business class).
And, for the record, I don't recline - I don't find any/enough benefit from doing so, and so don't out of respect for the passenger behind me. But the seats recline, and am perfectly fine any who choose to do so, including the passenger in front of me. There are choices for those who can't tolerate it.

I believe the decision is more profit driven than consumer driven. The proportional cost difference is insane for premium seats on long flights. It's like the choice is pay $700 for a seat that cuts off circulation and may give you blood clots, or pay $5,000 for a private pod.
If it was consumer driven, there would be a lot more middle ground to choose from as the consumer base for aviation customers is as diverse as the population in general.

Get a Microsoft Surface Pro. Mine has taken the place of my gigantic laptop, and it easily fits on a tray table.

Well, I was one of the people complaining about passengers reclining and smashing into my laptop. I use the laptop to build presentations for wherever I'm going that week. I use the iPad when I can. In my defense, I never complain to the recliners. I know it's their right to recline but it still bugs me every time someone does it.

Until we can find a way to make air travel cheaper we will have to keep suffering in these tiny seats with terrible leg room. I'm 6'4 and I travel less than I would like because outside the fact I'm tall, when a seat is reclined it usually goes right onto my knees which are damaged so it becomes unbearable.
I have paid for better seats in the past, but it really sucks to be punished for being tall, call that whining or whatever but when you live on an island like Iceland you have little choice but to fly for pretty much anything, god how I miss road trips.

If someone does a full recline to me on an air plane I become a #1 without remorse. And it isn't even on purpose, its just that at being 6"2 I really don't have a choice but to bump your seat each time I get up or adjust. Otherwise I do my best to not make that list... unless it is a stag then the booze is flowing.

I'm on a plane now. We've just boarded our Dublin flight. The guy in front already has his seat back despite you not being allowed to yet.
Any tips other than the headrest pull,

Hit the call attendant button, ask a trivial question, and before she leaves she'll ask the guy to prop his seat up.

Nope. The 2-3 inches behind my seat are my space, not their space.

In these types of situations, I find it best just to take a deep breath and think; "What would Joe Pesci do?".

This topic is kinda funny we just go in circles saying the same things over and over.
We all hate recliners, but basically accept it is their right to recline. Taller guys like myself particularly hate it, especially when working with a laptop.
I don't recline to try to be nice to the person behind me. But If I notice the guy behind me is reclining, I'll give him a taste of his own medicine.

I do not hate recliners one bit. I'm 6'3", mostly leg.
But you're right. It is the same conversation over and over!
